TWO WORKERS INJURED DURING FORKLIFT ACCIDENT

Two employees of Homestead Materials Handling Co. on Salem Turnpike were hurt Friday afternoon during a forklift accident.

Billy Altman, a Roanoke emergency medical services supervisor, said one of the men was trapped under a metal deck leveler, which weighed at least half a ton.

The other man was struck by the deck leveler as it fell.

One of the men was believed to have a possible fracture. Both suffered cuts and abrasions.

"All we know is we heard a loud boom," said a man who identified himself as the manager but would not give his name. "That's as far as it goes."

The man said employees freed the trapped man before rescue workers arrived.

The manager would not release the employees' names until their relatives had been notified.

Two ambulances and a fire truck responded to the accident, which occurred about 2.
