SULLIVAN WINS PRO GOLF TOURNAMENT

Hanging Rock's Chip Sullivan shot a 1-over-par 71 to capture the Fincastle Invitational Pro Am golf tournament on Sunday.

Sullivan, who fired a 63 on Saturday, tied the tournament record with a 134 at Fincastle Country Club in Bluefield.

Craig Gunn of Danville finished one shot back at 135. Hidden Valley's Tim Holbrook carded a 67 to place third at 137 and Billy King of Blue Hills finished fourth at 141.

In other sports news in the region:

The Roanoke Star Under-18 Red finished second in the Under-19 White Division of the Virginia Beach Columbus Day Soccer Tournament. In round-robin play, the Star won three games before losing the championship game by one point. Jamie Miller scored four goals to lead Roanoke while Jorge Rivera and Nate Morrison each had two goals.

Senior striker Denise Schilte scored two minutes into the second overtime period, breaking a 1-1 tie and lifting host Maryland-Baltimore County to a 3-1 Big South women's soccer victory over Radford.

Stone added an insurance goal for UMBC (6-5, 2-1), blasting in a shot from 20 yards away with 3:45 left in overtime.

Amanda Lebo scored the lone goal for Radford (3-6-1, 0-2).

Rutgers, the 20th-ranked women's soccer team in the country, slipped by Virginia Tech 1-0 at Blacksburg.

Lisa Rabii took a pass from Jen Bhalla, broke away from the Tech defense and scored from 10 yards out in the game's 11th minute. Knights' goalkeeper Sue Curtis recorded 11 saves in the shutout.

Tech sophomore goalie Hope Handley made 13 saves, giving her a school-record 127 saves this season.

The Virginia Tech men's soccer team lost to Virginia Commonwealth 2-0 in Richmond. Kwaku Adu-Gyamfi scored twice for the Rams (4-8), while the Hokies fell to 5-6-2 and remain winless on the road.

Virginia Tech's women's tennis team won five singles championships and one doubles title during the final round of the Virginia Tech Fall Invitational.

Katherine Chen and Lisa Ryan won singles and doubles championships. Chen won the No.1 singles title by beating Tennessee-Chattanooga's Esteresia Kruger 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, and Ryan won the No.6 title with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Davidson's Claire Chitwood. Chen and Ryan teamed to beat James Madison's Dawn Jessen and Jamie Marlowe 8-6 at third doubles.

Daria Ivan, Dagmara Mrozek and Daniela Agostinone won singles titles for Tech.

The Roanoke Express will hold an Open House for fans tonight at the Roanoke Civic Center from 5-8. Fans can meet players and inquire about season-ticket packages. Admission to the Open House is free.

The Express plays an exhibition game against Hampton Roads Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the civic center. The regular season begins Friday when the 1995 Riley Cup champion Richmond Renegades visit the civic center at 7:30 p.m.
