REPORTED EARNINGS

UAL Corp.

CHICAGO - United Airlines' parent company reported surprisingly strong earnings Tuesday for the summer quarter, due to higher ticket prices and busier traffic on its most profitable routes.

The near-tripling of net income at UAL Corp. underscored the industry's new-found financial health after years of debilitating losses. Chairman Gerald Greenwald credited UAL's employee-owners with holding costs in check.

UAL cited an increase in business travelers, who tend to buy more pricier last-minute tickets than tourists. The company said higher fares and stronger traffic levels were continuing.

Earnings in the quarter ended Sept. 30 were $243 million, or $14.06 per share, on revenues of $4.13 billion, compared with year-earlier $82 million, or $4.24 per share, on sales of $3.81 billion. Last year's quarter included after-tax costs of $96 million to cover the employee stock ownership plan. Without the charge, UAL's profit increase would have amounted to 36 percent.

In nine months, earnings were $397 million, or $25.89 per share, on revenues of $11.28 billion, compared with $40 million, or 3 cents per share, on revenues of $10.51 billion.
