KIPPS, TECH GREEKS HONORED FOR PARTNERSHIP

Kipps Elementary School in Blacksburg and the Virginia Tech Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils' Adopt-a-School program has received a Governor's Partnership in Education Award.

The award honors partnerships between the private sector and Virginia's schools that are designed to improve students' academic achievement through initiatives that promote high standards and benefit education.

The program at Kipps enhances academic performance in the classroom by providing college student volunteers to work one-on-one with the students

Volunteers also aid teachers with classroom responsibilities so the teachers can spend more time with the students.

Virginia Tech implemented the nationwide program with Kipps in January 1995.

The award is given to only 11 partnerships in throughout the Commonwealth. It also is one of the eight Regional Award winners, which recognizes one outstanding partnership within each of the eight geographic regions in the state.

Award recipients will be recognized at a ceremony and reception in Richmond.

A Blacksburg High School senior has been nominated to compete in the Principal's Leadership Award Scholarship Program, sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Christopher Donald is one of 150 students to compete for the $1,000 scholarship, which will be awarded in the spring.

Blacksburg principal Alfred Smith announced Donald's nomination.

Students are selected based on their participation in service organizations, clubs and athletics, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience and academic record.

Two other Blacksburg High seniors have been recognized for their outstanding performance on standardized tests.

Omoaluse Amenkhienan and Stefan Williams are two of nearly 3,500 Achievement Program participants commended to U.S. colleges and universities.

They scored in the top five percent of 10,000 Black Americans who requested consideration in the 1996 Achievement Program.

The competition is administered by the National Merit Scholarship Corp.

The students who were washing police cars in Christiansburg on Saturday, Oct. 21, weren't doing time.

They were members of Christiansburg High School's Teens Need Teens peer support group.

Each month, the group participates in a project or provides a service for the local police department. The car wash was the group's kickoff for future events.

The students washed, vacuumed and cleaned the windows of all town police cars and several Montgomery County and Sheriff's Department cars.

Students who participated included Traci Barr, Eric Beasley, Jenni Beller, Karen Cox, Chad Danner, Lacy Maxwell, April Orange, Eric Schmucker and Regina Meredith, their sponsor.

The Christiansburg High School After Prom Celebration Committee meets Thursday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. in the girl's health room at the school.

The meeting is open anyone who wants to help plan the event.

Radford High School Choral Patrons will be selling Virginia diner peanuts through Nov. 17 as their annual fund-raiser.

Delivery will be during the week of Dec. 3-9.

Auburn High School's Eagle Pride meets Monday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. in the school library.

This will be an informational session to update parents and community members on block scheduling at the school.

A decision on block scheduling for next year has not yet been made. The local block scheduling committee will answer questions during the session.

Charles Kepley of NationsBank will present a program, "Saving for your Child's Future," Thursday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at Margaret Beeks Elementary School in Blacksburg.

This is part of the school's PTA November general meeting.

The program is open to the public. A $50 U.S. Savings Bond will be given away as a door prize.

CHEERS

Bethel Elementary School won first place at the annual Virginia School Food Service Association conference held in Richmond.

The school was recognized for its Virginia Agricultural Week display.
