Veteran's Day program

CHRISTIANSBURG - American Legion Post 50 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5311 will sponsor a Veteran's Day program Saturday at the Veteran's Memorial Monument in town square. Retired Army Reserve Col. John Lemley, a combat veteran of the Korean War, will speak. Several residents and groups also will participate in the ceremonies. The program begins at 11 a.m. and is open to the public.

VEA chief to speak

Rob Jones, president of the Virginia Education Association, will speak Wednesday in Giles County on the status of education in the commonwealth.

Jones will discuss what impact election results will have on education. Giles Education Association invited the two-term VEA president as a prelude to American Education Week, Nov. 12-18.

Jones' speech will begin at 4 p.m. in the Giles High cafeteria and is open to the public.

Holiday closings

CHRISTIANSBURG - Some city offices will be closed in observance of Veteran's Day on Friday.

Christiansburg's town offices and the Recreation and Senior Center will be closed.

The city's garbage pickup for Friday will be delayed until Monday. Residents should have their trash at the curb by 8 a.m.

Blacksburg and Radford, however, have not planned any alteration in services. Both cities' garbage pickup will operate on regular schedules.

Ruritan breakfast|

ELLETT - The Ellett Valley Ruritan Club will have a pancake breakfast Saturday, Nov. 11, from 7 to 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church.

Donations will be accepted, and the money will be used for community projects. For more information, call Robert M. Wiatt at 552-4574.

Novelist's reading

BLACKSBURG - Local novelist Ann Goethe, author of "Midnight Lemonade," will read at University Volume Two Bookstore today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Tech wind ensemble

BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech's University Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform music by Handel, Hindemith, and other composers at its fall concert today at 8 p.m. in Squires Student Center.

The ensemble includes 55 student brass, woodwind and percussion musicians. It is conducted by David Widder.

Hip-hop concert

BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech's student union and Black Student Association will present a concert by "Coolio," a hip-hop rap group that performed the sound track for the recent movie "Dangerous Minds," Saturday, Nov. 11, at 8 p.m. in Burruss Hall.

Tickets are on sale now the Squires Student Center ticket office. Tickets are $7 for student and $10 for the general public.

UW yard sale

DUBLIN - The employees of Findlay Industries will sponsor a yard sale Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Pulaski County Corporate Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to benefit the United Way.

Items will include baked goods, arts and crafts, and others. Donations for the sale will be accepted at the plant before 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10.

Drama in Wytheville

Wytheville - Wytheville Community College will perform 1983's Pulitzer Prize drama winner, "'Night Mother," by Marsha Norman, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10 and 11, and Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17 and 18 at 8 p.m.

The play, starring Wytheville residents Carol Easter and Mary Henslee, is about a mother and daughter who are caught in a deadly struggle.
