NEW RIVER PEOPLE

The Kiwanis Club of Christiansburg recently honored one of its members as Kiwanian of the Year.

Dale Clark, vice president of First National Bank of Christiansburg, received the award for his service to the organization. Clark has served continuously as club secretary since 1988 and was acting secretary for four years before that. In this capacity he has been a keeper of all records, including membership and attendance. He also oversees the club's operations and fund-raising activities.

A native of Narrows, Clark lives in Christiansburg. He also is a member of the New River Valley Workshop of Radford board of directors and the Montgomery County Vocational Education Council.

The presentation of Clark's award took place at the Kiwanis Club's annual new officer installation dinner meeting at Stone's Cafeteria.

The new board of directors includes Dick Ballengee, Tony Harris, Dennis Hunter and Jim Vanhoozier; Phil Graybeal, treasurer; Jerry Higgins, vice president; and Greg Scull, president.

Pam Maier, banking center manager of NationsBank of Blacksburg, was presented with an autographed copy of one of Jerry Pallotta's books at a PTA meeting at Margaret Beeks Elementary School. Pallotta is a nationally known children's author who visited Beeks.

Following are the names of the New River Valley Counselor's Association 1995-96 leadership team: Joyce Beliveau, president; Lynda Murray, president-elect; Lynda Hartson, secretary/treasurer; Tamara Heft, government relations; Tiffany McNierney, public relations; Teresa Coulthard, awards and Tom and Sue Hohenshil, past presidents.

The New River Valley Counselor's Association is part of the Virginia Counselor's Association, a professional organization dedicated to the goal of meeting the needs of Virginia counselors in a variety of work settings.

A Blacksburg resident was crowned Ms. Virginia USA Petite in August at a pageant in Washington. The pageant benefits the Easter Seal Society and the Elton John AIDS foundation.

Ramanita Kandoth was selected from women across the state to represent Virginia in the national pageant, which will be Jan. 14-28 in Kansas City.

Kandoth teaches classical, semi-classical and folk dances and make up and skincare at the Open University at YMCA at Virginia Tech. She also is involved in organizing a fashion show and various ethnic dances for cultural events at Virginia Tech.

In addition to making appearances for the national charity beneficiaries and sponsors, Kandoth also wants to concentrate on working with the disabled and the underprivileged.

The USA Petite Pageants are designed exclusively for women 5'6" and under, ages 18-28 (Ms. USA Petite) and ages 29 and above (Ms. USA Petite Woman).

Jamie Wright of Blacksburg recently received his Eagle Award at a ceremony at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church. The award is the highest rank in scouting.

Wright is a member of Troop 704 and a senior at Blacksburg High School. He is the son of Jim and Wanda Wright.

Peggy Moore, director of the Wilderness Road Chorus of Sweet Adelines, recently attended an educational seminar in Puerta Vallerta, Mexico. More than 200 chorus directors from around the world participated in the event, where Moore attended classes on vocal production, barbershop sound, musical directing and management skills.

In addition to directing the Wilderness Road Chorus, Moore also sings with the quartet TerraNova.

The following people were winners of the Getaway drawings recently held by the New River Community College Alumni Association.

Jack Bruce of Pulaski, winner of a $400 travel voucher compliments of TravelMasters of Blacksburg; Becky Gunn of Dublin, winner of a weekend in Myrtle Beach compliments of Beach Cove Resort; Cara Newman of High Point, N.C., winner of a Sunday brunch cruise for two on the Pioneer Maid at Claytor Lake, compliments of New River Cruise Co.; and Ralph Doud of Radford, winner of 10 tickets to the New River Valley Speedway.
