Roanoke soccer teams head to tourney

Several Roanoke soccer teams will be competing in the Virginia Recreation and Parks Society Soccer Tournament Saturday.

The Heights Hound Dogs will be playing in Pulaski in the Pee Wee division tournament. The GSSA Thunder, a girls' Division 1 team will play in Roanoke County, and the Heights Lightning will play in Bedford County for the Little Division title.

The Yellow Jackets, girls' Division 2 team, will playing in Roanoke. The Heights Rowdies will play in Franklin County in the boy's Division 3, and the Lightning will play in Roanoke County in the girl's Division 3. The SWAT, a boy's Division 4 team, will be playing in Botetourt County.

Sandlot bowl set for Saturday, Sunday

The Sandlot Super Bowl will be held Saturday and Sunday at William Byrd High School. Recreation football teams from all over the Roanoke Valley played during the regular season and then in the semi-finals for a chance to compete in the event.

A $2 ticket is good for all of the final games.

Pee Wee and Little Division games will be played Saturday, and Junior Division games will be on Sunday.

In the first PeeWee game at starting at 10 a.m., the Northwest Raiders will take on the ICAA Falcons. The North Roanoke Vikings and the Cave Spring Falcons will play next. The teams in the third game will be announced later this week.

Little Division games begin at 2:30 p.m. with the Wilmont Cowboys playing the ICAA Falcons. The North Roanoke Hokies and Botetourt Cavaliers battle next. Teams for the final game will be announced later this week.

Sunday's games start at 1 p.m. when the Optimist Club takes on the Northwest Blue. In the second game, the Cave Spring Knights will play the Vinton Raiders. Teams for the final games will be announced later.

Buchanan resident wins regional race

Mitchell Ferguson of Buchanan, won the South Atlantic Road Racing Championship series in the Formula Vee Class of the Sports Car Club of America Oct. 29 with a second place finish in the final race of the season at Roebling Road in Savannah, Ga.
