W&M KEEN AS TRIBE WHIPS RICHMOND 27-7

Troy Keen, playing in his final college game, rushed for three touchdowns Saturday as William and Mary, its national playoff hopes gone, continued its domination of Richmond 27-7 in Williamsburg.

The Spiders (7-2-1 overall, 5-2 Yankee Conference) have lost seven straight to William and Mary (7-4, 5-3) and have not won in Williamsburg since 1973.

Richmond was at a definite disadvantage. Starting quarterback Jason Gabrel was suspended for the game because of an on-campus fight; leading rusher Minoso Rodgers was hampered by a sore ankle and had only five carries for 7 yards; and both the starting fullback and his backup were out with injuries.

Despite all the missing players, the Spiders did gain 160 yards on the ground. Backup quarterback Joe Elrod was 2 of 7 for 19 yards and two interceptions. He rushed for 44 yards and one score on 11 carries.

Elrod left the game late in the third quarter with a mild concussion. He was replaced by redshirt freshman Mat Shannon, who was 3 of 8 for 14 yards.

Keen, who entered the game No.3 on the Tribe career rushing list with 2,897 yards, had 52 yards on 19 carries. Derek Fitzgerald, who holds the school career rushing record with 3,650 yards, had 94 yards on 21 carries. He also threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Josh Whipple. It was Fitzgerald's first collegiate touchdown pass, coming in his final game.

Matt Byrne was 7-of-17 for 148 yards for the Tribe.

Wide receiver Antoine Lee, pressed into service at running back, led the Spiders with 62 yards on 14 carries.

In other state games:

James Madison 24, Connecticut 16: In Harrisonburg, Mike Cawley threw for two touchdowns in the third quarter to set a school career record as the Dukes beat Connecticut to keep alive their playoff hopes.

Cawley completed 14 of 24 passes for 147 yards and one interception. He hit Jay Jones with touchdown passes of 8 and 32 yards to give the Dukes (8-3, 6-2 Yankee Conference) a 24-9 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Huskies (7-3, 4-3), who had 204 yards rushing and 215 yards passing, scored with three minutes left in the game on Corey Taylor's 2-yard run for the final score.

The Duke's victory keeps alive their hopes for an invitation to the Division I-AA playoffs.

Cawley has 42 touchdown passes in his career, breaking the record of 40 held by Eriq Williams from 1989-92.

The Dukes trailed 9-0 midway through the first quarter after a Tory Taylor 75-yard scoring run and Jon Cohen's 23-yard field goal. Quincy Waller then picked off a Shane Stafford pass and returned it 29 yards for a score to cut the lead to 9-6. A John Coursey 32-yard field goal coupled with a safety gave the Dukes an 11-9 lead at the half.

Waller's touchdown interception was the third of his career, a school record. The previous record was held Mike Thurman (1978-82).

Stafford was 19 of 33 for 215 yards and two interceptions. Tory Taylor had 150 yards on 16 carries.

Jones had five catches for 71 yards for the Dukes.

Georgia Southern 7, Liberty 6: In Lynchburg, the Eagles pummeled the Flames' defense with 54 rushes for 225 yards, and Charles Bostick capped a 19-play, 80-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge as Georgia Southern beat Liberty.

The Flames' scores came on Phillip Harrelson field goals of 33 and 30 yards. The Eagles (7-3) attempted only four passes, three incomplete and one intercepted.

Roderick Russell led the Eagles with 94 yards on 13 carries. Bostick had 66 yards on 25 carries.

Antwan Chiles completed 18 of 31 passes for 141 yards and two interceptions for Liberty (7-3).

After Harrelson kicked his second field goal of the first quarter, the Eagles took possession on their 20-yard line. On the drive, Bostick carried nine times for 34 yards, as the Eagles kept the ball on the ground the entire time.

Lawrence Worthington had 70 yards on 14 carries for the Flames.

Bridgewater 7, Davidson 7: In Davidson, N.C., quarterback Cliff Henry ran for a 48-yard touchdown to help the Wildcats tie with the Eagles, Davidson's first tie in 19 years.

Both teams managed to end long losing streaks: Davidson (1-8-1) an eight-game streak and Bridgewater (0-9-1) a 23-game streak.

Bridgewater scored first after Wildcat fullback John Blake fumbled at the Davidson 36-yard line and defensive end David Barb returned the ball to the 16-yard line. Three plays later Chad Rowland threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mickey Hamilton with 31-seconds remaining in the first half.

Davidson tied the score when Henry ran his 48-yarder to cap a five-play 66-yard drive at 7:35 in the third period.

Neither team was strong offensively because of a driving rain and muddied field. Davidson gained 183 yards of offense and Bridgewater managed only 137.

Randolph-Macon 35, Hampden-Sydney 14: In Ashland, Michael Hurt rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another to lead the Yellow Jackets past the Tigers in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game.

Hurt rushed 10 times for 45 yards and scored on carries of 2 and 1 yard and threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Sydney Chappell. George Bland combined with Drew Scibilia on a 24-yard scoring pass, and Neal Ferguson ran 16 yards for a touchdown for Randolph-Macon (6-3-1).

Walt Bonderant threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Jason Raper to give Hampden-Sydney a 7-0 lead before Randolph-Macon tallied 35 straight points. Shannon Evans rushed 3 yards for a touchdown for Hampden-Sydney (4-6-0).

Hampton 28, Fayetteville State 7: In Hampton, Tyrone Mayer ran for 116 yards and a score on 21 carries, and Malcolm Benson rushed for two more touchdowns as the Pirates beat the Broncos.

Benson had touchdown runs of 2 and 1 yard for the Pirates (7-3). Mayer scored from 1-yard out as Hampton rolled up 181 yards on the ground. Matt Williams scored for the Pirates on a 1-yard run.

The Division II Broncos (1-7-2) did not score until late in the fourth quarter when Lamont Robinson threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Davis. The Broncos turned the ball over four times, once on a fumble and three times on interceptions.

Hampton held Fayetteville State to 69 yards rushing, en route to the Pirates' 18th consecutive home victory. The last loss at home was 20-9 to Winston-Salem State in 1991.
