W&L PLAYER ODAC'S BEST IN VOLLEYBALL

Hilary Martin, a sophomore at Washington and Lee, was selected Monday as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference volleyball player of the year by a vote of league coaches.

Martin, a native of Norfolk, was ranked second in the ODAC in hitting percentage at .345 and led the league in kills with 359.

Washington and Lee's Terri Dadio was voted coach of the year after leading the Generals to a 29-6 record.

Besides Martin, first-teamers were Crystal Wilson of Roanoke College, Cheryl Taurassi of W&L, Jennifer Smith of Sweet Briar, Laura Nelson of Guilford and Shannon Harrison of Bridgewater.

VMI downed B.C. Benston 88-75 in an exhibition men's basketball game in Lexington. Lawrence Gullette paced the Keydets with 24 points and Maurice Spencer and Lester Johnson added 14 apiece.

Andrea Karolyi scored 22 points to lead Ferencvarosi Torna Club of Hungary past Virginia 71-69 in a women's basketball game at University Hall. Wendy Palmer scored 16 points to lead four Cavaliers in double figures.
