MARIE CALLENDER, PIE EXPERT, DIES

Marie Callender, who opened a pie shop in 1948 that evolved into a restaurant chain and frozen-entree business, has died. She was 88.

Callender had been ill with cancer and died Saturday at Rossmoor Regency Residential Community, said Orange County sheriff's Lt. Lynn Nehring.

For many, her name was synonymous with mouth-watering pies.

``You mention pies, and nine of 10 people will think Marie Callender,'' said Leonard Dreyer, the chief executive of Marie Callender Pie Shops Inc. in Orange. ``Our recipes are all based upon her original ones.''

The restaurant chain has 146 units, mostly in California. It also has locations in Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.
