PATTERSON, Oscar Jr., 70, of Roanoke, died Friday, November 10, 1995. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Everett Arnold and Kathy Patterson, Patterson, N. J.; two granddaughters, Tiffany Marie and Nicole Mildred Patterson; brother and sister-in-law, Van Everett and Joyce Patterson, Roanoke; four sisters, Cecil E. Greene, Lillie T. Patterson, Barbara C. Patterson, Frances P. Chubb and husband, Richard; aunt, Mrs. Lillie Williams, Roanoke; brother-in-law, Frederick Hawkins; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Memorial services will be conducted Wednesday, November 15, 1995 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Charles Roberts officiating. BAKER, Kathleen O., 45, of Norfolk, died Sunday, November, 12,1995. She was a Clerk General at the Norfolk District Court. She was a member of the Glad Tidings Church. BARNETT, Essie Weddle, 95, of Elliston, died Monday, November 13, 1995. She was the daughter of John Stuart and Callie Spangler Weddle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Richard Barnett. Essie was a member of the White Memorial United Methodist Church, Shawsville, and a charter member of the Elliston Home Demonstration Club with 63 years service. She was a member of the Montgomery County Senior Citizens Volunteer Group. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol B. and Richard H. BELCHER, John Abe, 84, of Floyd passed away on Sunday, November 12, 1995 at his home. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, John Wesley and Ollie Boyd Belcher; and three sisters, Lou Anne Belcher, Mae McPeak, and Gaye Wood. Mr. Belcher was retired from the Blue Ridge Parkway. CASH, Helen Harrison, 82, of Hardy, passed away Monday, November 13, 1995 in a Roanoke Hospital. She was the widow of Warren A. Cash. And was retired from Kenrose Manufacturing Co. EPPERLY, James Berkley, age 55, of Henderson, Nevada and formerly of Pembroke, VA, died November 1, 1995 in the VA Medical Center in Henderson. Born in Pembroke on October 17, 1930. He was a son of the late John Thomas Epperly and Hallie Epperly Earnest. Surviving are his wife Barbara Epperly; a son, David Epperly , Nevada; two sisters, Ada E Sutphin , Floyd, and Ruth E. Epperly, Blacksburg; two brothers, Harry T. Epperly, Lewisburg, W. VA., and A. Gib Epperly, Pembroke. Funeral services and cremation was completed in Nevada. FREUND, John Roger, 49, of Roanoke, died Sunday, November 12, 1995. John's spirit and determination overcame and incurable brain tumor. He lived victoriously for over three years before his peaceful passing. He served in the Navy aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Kittyhawk during the Vietnam era. John earned an engineering operations degree from N.C. State. He worked for Square D. Company for 22 years. Surviving is his wife, Pat Freund; a daughter, Karen Freund; his parents, Albert and Florence Freund of Greensboro, N.C.; brothers, Albert Freund, Jr. of Chapel Hill, N.C., Robert Freund of Greensboro, N.C.; sisters, Joan Roach, also of Greensboro, N.C. and Terry Walters, of Mary Ester, Fla. GRANT, Alice Schindler, 83, of Blacksburg, died Sunday, November 12, 1995, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Clara Wooldridge Schindler. Mrs. Grant, formerly of Louisville, KY has lived in Blacksburg since 1947 where she was active in the Blacksburg United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband William A. Grant. Surviving are a daughter, Laura Lee Grant, Colchester, CT; two sons and a daughter-in-law, William Michael and Nedlee Chapman Grant, Morgantown, WV, and Stephen Alan Grant, Blacksburg; two grandchildren, Sarah Beth Grant, Madison, Wisconsin, and William Chapman Grant, Morgantown, W.V.; one sister, Martha Owen, Louisville, KY; one sister-in-law, Margaret Helen Lander, Clarksville, TN; nieces and nephews. HESS, Warren Clifford, 78, of Smith Mountain Lake, passed away Saturday, November 11, 1995 in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born March 20, 1917, a son of the late Evan Mumms Hess and Cora Boyts Hess. His wife was the late Marjorie Smith Hess and he was predeceased by a daughter, Carol Hess Carroll. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a retired Administrator of the Veterans Administration Hospital, Salem. He is survived by a son, Bill Hess, California; two granddaughters, Shanti Hess, California, Shannon Carroll, Roanoke. Private services will be held at a later date. HETHERINGTON, Grace Cook, 96, of Bristol, Tenn., formerly of Giles County, Va., died Monday, November 13, 1995 at the home of her niece. Born in Giles County on January 16, 1899, she was the daughte r of the late Jacob and Elizabeth Jane Stephens Cook. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Tracy Kirk and her second husband, Floyd Hetherington. JONES, Mary Vennie Mrs., 73, of the Rosedale Community of Russell County, died Sunday, November 12, 1995 in the Indian Path Hospital in Kingsport. A lifelong resident of Russell County she was a retired employee of Russell County Medical Center. She was a member of the Elk Garden United Methodist Church. She was the widow of M. Thomas Jones. KAPPAS, Nicholas Christos, (``Nick''), 98, of Blacksburg, died Sunday, November 12, 1995 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. Born in Greece on May 16, 1897, he was the son of the late Christos and Maria Kappas. Mr. Kappas came to the United States from the Province of Evrytania, Greece to Roanoke in 1914. He moved to Blacksburg in 1921 and established the original Greek's Restaurant, where he was active even after his retirement. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Hunter's Masonic Lodge, #156 A.F. & A.M.., the Kazim Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Roanoke, and the Evrytania Association of America. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Maria N. Kappas; one son and daughter-in-law, Chris N. and Maria C. Kappas; two grandchildren, Vicki Kappas and Nicky Kappas, all of Blacksburg. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, 1995 at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Nicholas G. Bacalis officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. THOMAS Jr., John Wiley, (``J.W.""), 72, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, November 13, 1995, at The Virginia Veteran's Care Center. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a retired freight claims agent from Norfolk Southern Railway. Mr. Thomas was a member of Grandin Court Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Jean F. Thomas; son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. and Jean D. Thomas; two grandchildren, Stephanie and Leslie Thomas, all of Roanoke. He was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict, member of the Christiansburg DAV Chapter #29, and was a retired employee of Inland Motors. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Bugg Thomas, Radford; three daughters, Mrs. Laura Mercier and Mrs. Barbara McDaniel, both of Radford, Mrs. Wanda Graham, Blacksburg; one sister, Mrs. Mary Jane Muncy, Roanoke; two half brothers, Sherman Hinkley, Pennsylvania, and Sidney Hinkley, Springfield; one half sister, Joyce Ann Underwood, Roanoke; six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 15, 1995 at 2 p.m. at the Friendship Baptist Church in Radford, with the Rev. Jimmy Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin, where members of VFW Post #776 of Radford will conduct military graveside rites. Warren, Cora Belle, 85, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, November 12, 1995 in a local hospital. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Willie Mae and Rev. Robert K. Ingram; daughter, Mrs. Betty Jean Lewis; and one son, Luther Jr. (Geraldine) Watson; nineteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; aunt, Mrs. Roberta Webb, Roanoke; and a host of other relatives and devoted nurses, Ms. Peggy Gossett and Ms. Angeline Baylor. WESLEY, Roy Lewis, 66, of Blacksburg, died Sunday, November 12, 1995 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. Dr. Wesley was Professor Emeritus in the Department of Food Science and Technology at Va. Tech. Born in Casey County, Ky. on May 1, 1929, he was the son of the late William Henry and Flossie Henson Wesley. He served four years in the Air Force, then received his B.S. in 1955 from Berea College, Ky., followed by his M.S. in 1958 and Ph.D. in 1966 from Purdue University. He and his wife had four sons and one daughter, all of whom received Bachelor's degrees from Va. Tech. He retired in 1988 and enjoyed farming, traveling, hunting and spending time with his family. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Tester Wesley; a daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Mark Reece, Newport; four sons and daughters-in-law, Drs. Ronald and Beth Wesley, Cherry Hill, N.J.; Dr. Roger and Sally Wesley, Roanoke, Dr. Douglas and Sandy Wesley, Ft. Collins. Colo., Gregory and Patti Wesley, Woodbridge; nine grandchildren, Anna Wesley, Christa Wesley, Claire Wesley, Angela Reece, Casey Reece, Dylan Wesley, Dallas Wesley, Drew Wesley, and Shannon Wesley; three sisters, Ruth Gilpin, Liberty, Ky., Hazel Ellingsworth, Franklin, Ind., and Faye Brevig, Christiansburg; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, 1995 at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Don McKinney officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. WOOD, Lydia Mullins, 92, of Christiansburg, died Sunday, November 12, 1995 in Wheatland Hills Retirement Center, Fairlawn. She was the widow of William Stuart Wood. She is survived by one daughter, Kathy Bennett, Dublin; one brother, Edward Mullins, California; two grandsons, Jason Bennett, Chuck Bennett. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jerry Shepherd, with burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
