MAN CHARGED WITH CARJACKING

An unidentified man unwittingly thwarted a possible carjacking attempt Wednesday afternoon when he pulled into a Southeast Roanoke parking lot.

About 5, a Southwest Roanoke resident got into her car, which was parked in the 100 block of Salem Avenue Southeast. She told police a man appeared out of nowhere and grabbed her.

He demanded she get out of the car. She resisted, but the man yelled profanities at her and dragged her from the car, according to a police news release issued Thursday night.

As the woman was being pulled from the car, an unidentified man drove up. The cursing man released the woman and fled.

An officer patrolling the 400 block of Tazewell Avenue Southeast picked up Robert Dave Matthews, 52. Matthews was charged with attempted carjacking and public drunkenness.

He remained in Roanoke City Jail on Thursday night.
