HASKINS TABBED BEST

VMI junior tailback Thomas Haskins has been named the 1995 Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Year by the league's coaches. Haskins received four votes to edge Marshall senior tailback Chris Park, who got three votes. Appalachian State quarterback Scott Satterfield earned the other two votes.

Haskins rushed for 1,548 yards and 17 touchdowns on 248 carries to set a VMI single-season rushing record. He is also the Keydets' all-time leading rusher with 3,651 yards. He leads the conference in rushing, scoring (106 points, 9.64 per game) and all-purpose yardage (194 yards per game).

Appalachian State junior linebacker Dexter Coakley was chosen Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. He finished second in the conference in tackles with 150, recorded 11 stops for loss, forced six fumbles and broke up eight passes.

Appalachian State's Jerry Moore was named Coach of the Year. He finished with eight votes to outdistance runner-up Bill Stewart of VMI, who received the other vote.

Marshall quarterback Chad Pennington was chosen Freshman of the Year. After knee injuries to the starting and backup quarterbacks, he led Marshall to a 7-1 record in its last eight games. He has completed .593 percent of his passes to lead the conference and has thrown for 1,650 yards and 10 touchdowns.
