PATRICK HENRY COMES UP SHORT

Patrick Henry shook off a sluggish start and a 12-point halftime deficit to make it close but fell short in a 67-65 loss to Loris (S.C.) in Loris, S.C., on Saturday.

The Patriots (2-2) trailed by six points after three quarters and took a three point lead with 1:30 to play. Several Patrick Henry turnovers proved costly down the stretch and Loris regained a two point advantage. The Patriots had a chance to tie with four seconds remaining but missed the front end of a one and one and could not come up with the rebound.

Ralph Bellamy of Loris led all scorers with 28 points.

Patrick Henry was led by Phillip Taylor (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Brooks Berry (16 points, nine rebounds).

Roanoke Valley Christian 81, Holy Cross 59: Roanoke Valley Christian broke open a close game in the fourth quarter of its Virginia Independent Conference game with Holy Cross.

The Eagles (2-1 overall, 1-1 district) led by only five points at the half and by nine after three quarters. Substitutes started the fourth quarter for the Eagles and the starters played only sporadically in the final stanza, but they were still able to pull away for the 22 point victory. Roanoke Valley Christian was led by Mark DeLong's 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Eric Johnson added 12 points and nine assists.

The Gaels (2-3 overall, 1-2 district) were led by Garth Calhoun's 17 points.

Girls

Chatham Hall 49, North Cross 36: The hosts held the Raiders to nine points over the second and third quarters en route to a victory in Chatham.

North Cross (0-3) was outscored 31-9 as Chatham Hall (1-1) overcame a four-point first-quarter deficit.

Ann Ballenger and Katherine Kelly scored 10 points each for the Raiders. Taylor Hall had 14 for Chatham Hall.

Roanoke Valley Christian 47, Holy Cross 34: The Eagles extended their record to 3-0 with a victory over the visiting Gaels.

Rebecca Bryant sparked RVC with 10 points and 13 rebounds, and teammate Gina Guthrie led all scorers with 14 points and nine rebounds.

The Gaels (2-2) were led by Marie Gamis, who scored nine points.
