SHARE food program

CHRISTIANSBURG - SHARE Virginia will distribute 11,500 food packages to 52 counties in Southwest Virginia, southern West Virginia, northeastern Tennessee and eastern Kentucky. This distribution, the largest in SHARE's 11-year history, will be handled by 200 church and civic group host organizations.

The New River Valley's 50 host groups will distribute 2,100 food packages.

The SHARE program is open to the public. Packages are $14 in cash or food stamps and two hours of volunteer work. Participants receive $30 worth of fresh fruits, vegetables, staple items and frozen meats. Community services may be done at the host organization, the SHARE warehouse, or any other volunteer or church organization.

Blood center closed

CHRISTIANSBURG - The American Red Cross New River Valley Donor Center will be closed on Dec. 21. Donors with appointments that day should call 961-2207 to reschedule. The center will be closed Dec. 21 through Dec. 27 and will reopen Dec. 28, from noon-6 p.m and Dec. 29, from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m.

Free cholesterol test kits will be available at bloodmobile sites to people 20 and older. Bloodmobile blood drives are Monday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Blacksburg Mariott; Dec. 26, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., First Christian Church, Radford; Dec. 29, noon-6 p.m., St. Paul's Methodist Church, Christiansburg.
