WRESTLING TOURNAMENT STARTS TODAY

The 16-team Christiansburg Christmas Wrestling Tournament will be held today and Friday at Christiansburg High School.

Magna Vista, the defending champion, will be joined by the host Blue Demons, Blacksburg, Radford, Cave Spring, Salem, Glenvar, Staunton River, Floyd County, Covington, Bassett, Carroll County, Shawsville, Graham, Tazewell and Patrick County.

First-round matches begin tonight at 6 and will continue through the evening. Friday's schedule starts at 10:30 a.m. with semifinal matches running throughout the day. The consolation finals are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Championship finals start at 8.

Two members of the All Army wrestling team, currently the top-ranked amateur squad in the country, will hold an exhibition and clinic today. The wrestlers are Lt. Trevor Humphries, a 125-pounder who is ranked fifth nationally, and Specialist Aaron White, a 136-pounder. Both wrestlers are considered potential U.S. Olympians.

The exhibition will be between weigh-ins and the start of the opening round matches.

In other regional sports news:

nRamon Henderson will return for his fourth year as manager of the Martinsville Phillies, the Appalachian League baseball team announced. Also returning will be pitching coach Carlos Arroyo, who will be in his second year there. Hitting coach Kelly Heath will not be back. Roving organizational instructors will take over those duties.
