MAN CHARGED IN STORE ROBBERY

Roanoke police arrested one man and are seeking another in connection with two unrelated convenience store robberies over the weekend.

At 9:32 p.m. Friday, a man entered the Amoco Foodshop at 3348 Orange Ave. and demanded money after using the store's restroom, according to police.

A clerk told police the man came out of the bathroom with his hand in his pocket and announced he was going to "stick up" the store. The clerk thought the man had a weapon in his pocket, according to a police news release.

The man took an undisclosed amount of cash, according to the release.

An officer spotted a man matching the robber's description Sunday night after the man reported his vehicle stolen. Police charged Ervin Wayne Frith, 54, of Rocky Mount with robbery, according to police.

Another man held up the Super Mart at 1028 Hershberger Road shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday, police said.

He wore a ski mask and brandished a small handgun, police said.

The clerk turned over an undetermined amount of cash from the register and $6 from her purse, according to the release.

No arrests have been made.

Police also reported the following incidents:

A 25-year-old Roanoke man was shot about 3:15 a.m. Saturday in the Lansdowne housing development. Police were summoned to Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley, where they found the victim being treated for a gunshot wound to the chest.

Two men told police they waited in a car while the victim visited a friend in one of the apartments. The victim later ran back to the car, saying he'd been shot, and the men drove him to the hospital.

Police have been unable to interview the victim, who was transferred to Roanoke Memorial Hospital later that day. His condition was serious but stable Saturday, but no update was available Monday night.

A man bit an off-duty Roanoke police officer in the face when the officer tried to arrest him, according to a police news release. Officer Levert Jackson asked the man to leave a Church Avenue restaurant where the officer works, but the man returned later and yelled obscenities at Jackson.

Jackson stepped outside to arrest the man, and a struggle ensued, with both men falling to the ground. After the officer was bitten, restaurant patrons helped him hold the man down and handcuff him.

Randy L. Hudgins, 34, of the 600 block of Bullitt Avenue Southeast, was charged with assaulting a police officer and trespassing. It was not known whether Jackson sought medical treatment.
