HERE'S SOME COLD-WEATHER ADVICE WORTH HEEDING

Dr. William Prillaman, an internist at Radford Community Hospital, offers these tips for dealing with cold weather:

In general, older adults have a lower core body temperature. They should be aware that they are more susceptible to hypothermia than younger people are.

Avoid accelerated heat loss by wearing layers of clothing, a hat and gloves. (Most body-heat loss is through an uncovered head.)

The skin on ears, cheeks, nose and fingers should be covered to avoid frostbite.

If you have angina, don't go outside and breathe very cold air. Keep a scarf across your face to allow the air to warm as it moves into the sinuses to the lungs.

Individuals with severe respiratory problems should be aware that the cold depresses breathing. The best advice is to stay out of the cold.

Alcohol consumption causes blood vessels beneath the skin to dilate, accelerating heat loss.

Increase your intake of fluids (other than alcohol).

Don't shovel snow to excess (and do it slowly). If you have a cardiac problem, you should be aware that you are much more susceptible to cardiac injury and should avoid the activity.
