K of C sponsors free-throw contest

The Knights of Columbus Council 562 is sponsoring its annual free-throw contest on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Roanoke Catholic High School gym. Boys and girls ages 10-14 may compete.

The basketball contest is free. Entry forms and permission forms signed by a parent or guardian must be completed at registration. Street shoes are not allowed, but participants may play in socks.

Local winners will continue to district and state competition. Each participant will receive a certificate, and winners will be presented awards at the Knights of Columbus Annual Basketball Tournament in March.

Elks' hoop shoot set for Saturday

The Elks Club is holding its annual hoop shoot for children ages 8 through 13 on Saturday at the James Madison Middle School gym.

The competition will be divided into three age groups, 8- to 9-year-olds, 10- to 11-year olds and 12- to 13 year-olds. The boys will shoot at 9:30 a.m.; the girls at 11 a.m.

Tax return assistance for the elderly

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of the LOA Area Agency on Aging, in conjunction with the American Association of Retired Persons, is helping senior citizens prepare individual income tax returns.

Tax-Aide, a program that assists low- to moderate-income taxpayers, will provide help at nine sites in the Roanoke Valley from Feb. 5 through April 15. Counselors are also available to make home visits.

Program offers training for volunteers

The Sexual Assault Response and Awareness Program needs volunteers for its 24-hour sexual assault crisis hot line.

A training session for the program's Volunteer Companions will be held on Jan. 26, 7-9 p.m.; Jan. 27, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; and Jan. 28, 1-5 p.m.
