COMPETITION HEAVY FOR RENOVATION GRANT

The town of Pulaski should know within a few months if it will get a federal grant to help reopen the Draper Mountain Overlook and Wayside. If it does, the scenic overlook could be open again before the end of the year.

But there is a lot of competition for this final round of grants through the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act. If the project gets no ISTEA money, there is no way to guess how long it will take to use a plan obtained from Virginia Tech's Community Design Assistance Center to renovate the site.

Barry Matherly, the town's economic development director, outlined the plan to Town Council at its meeting Tuesday night.

Renovation of the overlook supports the town's economic development plan, which includes the goals of increasing tourism and beautifying town entrances. The project would enhance plans being made to expand tourism facilities at the Pulaski depot and eventually connect the New River Trail State Park with the wayside.

In other business, council approved a request from American Electric Power, formerly Appalachian Power Co., for an easement to re-route a power line in the Macgill Recreation Complex; reappointed Kathleen Kirk to a new term on the town Planning Commission; and got a good report from an audit of town finances.

The next council meeting will be a quarterly joint session with the Pulaski County Board of Supervisors and Dublin Town Council at Columbia Pulaski Community Hospital at 7 p.m. Jan. 29.
