NAMES ON CAMPUS

Radford University

Robert Small, dean of Radford University's College of Education and Human Development, recently received the ALAN award for outstanding contributions to the field of young adult literature at the National Council of Teachers of English convention. Small has served as president of ALAN and co-editor of the ALAN Review.

Four area residents are the newest members of Radford University's Athletic Association Advisory Council. The new members are:

Joseph Sheffey of New River, financial aid coordinator at New River Community College;

William Armentrout of Radford, pharmacists and owner of the Medicine Shoppe;

Charlotte Shrewsbury of Radford, vice president of First Virginia Bank Southwest;

Bob Whitmer of Radford, retired vice president of Crestar Bank.

Virginia Tech

Graduate student Michelle Shabazz was recently initiated into Omicron Tau Theta, a professional society in vocational education. Shabazz is a master's student in vocational education, special needs at the university. She will graduate in May.

A 1986 graduate of Radford High School, she is the daughter of Claude and Margaret Shabazz of Radford.

A Virginia Tech professor has won the American Pulpwood Association's 1995 Appalachian Technical Division Forestry Activist Award.

Robert Shaffer, associate professor of industrial forestry operations and extension specialist in timber harvesting, was recognized for his accomplishments in promoting forest management, wise use and timber harvesting to the general public. Shaffer is the incoming president of the Virginia Forestry Association.

Alyce Knaflich, a senior at Virginia Tech, has been awarded the Hubbard Farms Charitable Foundation's Poultry Science Scholarship. Knaflich plans to pursue her interest in egg hatchability in a broiler/breeder operation.

Knaflich is secretary of the Virginia Tech Poultry Science Club and works at the university's poultry laboratory and farm.

Recent Graduates

Several area students graduated and received degrees from their respective schools. They are:

Manoca E. Sabo received a degree from from Virginia Western Community College. She is from Christiansburg.

Amber P. Smith of Pulaski. She received a degree in psychology with a minor in sociology from Concord College in Athens, W.Va.

James Armentrout recently received a master's degree in counseling psychology from Radford University. He has accepted a position with the New River Valley Community Service Board, working in the in-home family services. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Armentrout of Radford.
