GLENVAR BEATS BATH

Glenvar rode a big third quarter to a 68-52 victory over previously undefeated Bath County in a Pioneer District boys' basketball matchup Wednesday night at Glenvar.

Bath County cut the Glenvar lead to two points twice early in the third period, but then the Highlanders (7-4 overall, 4-0 district) went on a 10-2 run as they outscored the Chargers 20-6 in the quarter. James Williams and Corey Willis combined for 15 points in the period as Glenvar took a 45-27 lead.

Staunton River 72, Appomattox County 63: Hunter Hoggatt buried a 3-pointer with seven seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 55 and then scored six in the overtime as Staunton River knocked off Appomattox County in a Seminole District game in Moneta. Hoggatt finished with a game-high 25 points for the Golden Eagles (3-6, 3-6).

Rockbridge County 60, Alleghany 58: Ricky Wright scored 13 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter as the Wildcats earned a Blue Ridge District comeback victory at Covington. Ryan Crackle led Alleghany with 15 points.

Galax 65, Narrows 50: Jeff Ross scored 13 of his 21 points in the decisive first quarter as the Maroon Tide surged past the Green Wave in a Mountain Empire District game in Galax. Galax (4-5, 1-1) outscored Narrows (3-4, 0-1) 19-4 in the first quarter. Ross' teammate, Ken Houtz, scored all of his 21 points in the second half.

Martinsville 79, Patrick County 71: Leander Preston scored 10 of his game-high 29 points in the fourth quarter as Martinsville held on for the Piedmont District win over Patrick County. Manti Venable scored nine of his 21 in the fourth to aid the Bulldogs (3-6, 3-5).

Giles 66, Christiansburg 62: John King scored Giles' last four points as the Spartans held on for the non-district victory over Christiansburg. Robbie Claytor led the Spartans (8-1) with 15 points. Christiansburg (9-2) was led by Darrell Calloway with 16 points.

Rocky Gap 65, Montcalm, W.Va. 62: Matthew Akers hit two free throws with 14 seconds to lift the Eagles over Montcalm in a non-district game at Rocky Gap. Nathan Blessing had a game-high 19 points for Rocky Gap (3-6).

Radford 69, Bland 48: The Bobcats jumped on the Rockets early and cruised to a non-district victory in Bland. The Bobcats were led by Derrick Chapman's 24 points.

Grayson County 66, Rural Retreat 54: Senior forward Brian McDonnell scored a career-high 16 points as Grayson County remained unbeaten (10-0) with the non-district win over Rural Retreat in Independence. Rural Retreat (1-10) was led by Chris Rakes, who scored 17.

Liberty 67, Brookville 63: The unbeaten Minutemen held a decisive advantage after a big second quarter behind the performances of Neil Roop and J.J. Coles, but they had to hold off a late rally by the Bees to claim a Seminole District win in Lynchburg. Cheyney Preston led the Minutemen with 20.

Highland 70, James River 66: The Rams punctuated an 18-point comeback by outscoring the Knights 31-11 in the fourth quarter in the Pioneer District game in Buchanan. Highland (3-6, 1-2) was led by Bryan Werner's 18 points. James River (6-3, 0-3) got 18 points from Chris Firebaugh.
