CHILDRESS HELPS BYRD FLY OVER BASSETT

Chris Childress scored 10 of his 23 points in the second quarter as William Byrd took a 16-point lead and cruised to a 63-53 non-district victory over visiting Bassett on Saturday in boys' action.

Mayo Wilson added 11 points for the Terriers (11-3), who beat Lord Botetourt on Friday night.

Bassett (7-6) was led by Carie Manns, who scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half. Manns pumped in 13 in the fourth quarter as the Bengals made a late run.

Covington Boys' Home 64, Mount Carmel 52: The Indians took over in the third quarter to win a non-district game in Luray.

Freddy Portillo had 17 points, Sean Riddick 16 and Chris Hampton 14 for Covington Boys' Home (9-9), which won the third quarter 28-10 to take control.<

Covington 76, Alleghany 65: Five players scored in double figures as the Cougars downed the Mountaineers in a non-district game in Low Moor.

Cory Whitaker scored 16 points to lead Covington. Oliver Jordan and Kevin Cook led the Mountaineers with 13 points each.

Bland 63, Shawsville 55: The Rockets battled back from an eight-point halftime deficit, scoring 43 second-half points to defeat the Shawnees in a non-district game in Bland.

The Rockets (4-6) were led by Lee Meadows' 15 points.

Larry Smith led Shawsville with 16 points.

Fort Chiswell 74 Auburn 59: The Pioneers (5-6) broke loose for 29 points in the second quarter of their non-district matchup with the Eagles en route to a 15-point victory.

Fort Chiswell coach Danny Jonas recorded the 500th victory of his coaching career, which combines girls' varsity, boys' junior varsity and boys' varsity.

Girls

Pulaski County 65, E.C. Glass 53: The Cougars (10-5) broke open a close game in the third quarter to defeat the Hilltoppers (10-5) in a non-district game in Dublin.

Pulaski County was led by Katrina Williams' 21 points.
