NEW RIVER VALLEY PEOPLE

Leslie Roberts Gregg of Blacksburg, recently traveled to the Bahamas to present her paper, "A Portrait Artist's View of the Face" to the Chalmers Lyons Research Society. The paper discussed the historical and anatomic basis for perceiving and rendering the human face.

Artist Ellen Shakin, of Floyd, is one of 120 artists chosen from a pool of 1,200 to participate in the 14th Smithsonian Craft Show. Shakin's pots will be on display during the show held from April 25-28 at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.

David Lunsford a sophomore at Christiansburg High School, was awarded the Eagle Scout badge at a Court of Honor ceremony on Feb. 10. Lunsford is a member of Troop 141, sponsored by Christiansburg Presbyterian Church. He is the son of Jeff and Carol Lunsford of Christiansburg.

The Blacksburg Mountain View Garden Club met at the home of Ruby Murley in January. Virginia Shaw was the co-hostess. Harriet Damant, president, welcomed new member Mary Montgomery. The program was on hummingbirds.

John Wenrich, a teacher at the Southwest Virginia's Governor's School for Science, Mathematics and Technology, was named Apple Distinguished Educator. Apple Computer trains teachers to use technology in the classroom and for professional development. Wenrich will work with school systems in the southwest for the next two years to help teachers integrate technology into the classroom.

Carolyn Carter was the keynote speaker at the recent Educational Equity conference, "Growing Smart in Science and Technology: What's Working for Girls in School," at Virginia Tech's Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center. Other speakers included Carol Burger, National Science Foundation; Julie Grady, Blacksburg High School; Carl Grady, Christiansburg High School; Suzan Mauney, Montgomery County Public Schools; Bevlee Watford, College of Engineering, Virginia Tech and Paula Wilder, Montgomery County Public Schools.

James M. Price, was presented with an award for 40 years of service to the Town of Blacksburg. Price works in the Public Works Department.
