BOAT SAFETY COURSES

GAME AND FISH DEPARTMENT: Classes are sponsored by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries each month February through November at the Safety Council of Southwest Virginia, 2728 Colonial Ave. Six hours of instruction is presented during two nights, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. There is no charge for instruction or materials, but participants should register ahead of time by calling the Safety Council office at 344-4676.

The dates for upcoming classes are March 11 and 13, April 15 and 17, May 14 and 15, June 18 and 19, July 16 and 17, Aug. 13 and 14, Sept. 17 and 18, Oct. 15 and 16, Nov. 19 and 20.

ROANOKE VALLEY POWER SQUADRON: Two advanced courses have been scheduled, one beginning 7 p.m. March 5 at the Safety Council of Southwest Virginia, 2728 Colonial Ave. Classes will continue weekly, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for eight weeks. Instruction is free, but materials cost $25. To enroll, call 427-1812 in the Roanoke Valley and 576-2181 at Smith Mountain Lake.

A second advanced course will be conducted at the Lewis-Gale Clinic, 13441 Booker T. Washington Highway on Virginia 122 in the Smith Mountain Lake area. It begins at 7 p.m. March 6 and continues weekly for eight weeks. The fees and phone numbers to register are the same as the Roanoke classes.

COAST GUARD AUXILIARY: Flotilla 81 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary has scheduled its Boating Skills and Seamanship Course March 7, 7:15 p.m. at the Safety Council of Southwest Virginia office, 2728 Colonial Ave. This is a multiweek course that recently has been rewritten. MONETA RESCUE SQUAD-SMITH MOUNTAIN EAGLE: Department of Game and Inland Fisheries classes have been scheduled for March 19 and 20; June 25 and 26 and July 30 and 31 starting 7 p.m. Register by calling 540-297-1222. There is no charge.

SMITH MOUNTAIN STATE PARK: Department of Game and Inland Fisheries course, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. April 16 and 17, May 7 and 8, instructors are park officials, register by calling the park headquarters, 297-6066.

BEDFORD PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT: Department of Game and Inland Fisheries course, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., at Liberty Lake Park, register by calling the Parks and Recreation Department, 586-7161.

CHRISTIANSBURG PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT: Department of Game and Inland Fisheries course, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. National Guard Armory in Christiansburg, $3 fee for use of facility, register after May 1 by calling 540-382-2349.
