Bicycle time trials

The Roanoke Festival in the Park will host the ROC Hillclimb, a bicycle time trial to the summit of Mill Mountain, on May 26. This is one of the largest single-day Pro-Am races on the East Coast.

The Saturn Festival Cup and Cardinal Women's Pro Race will be held in downtown Roanoke on May 27.

'Local Colors'

``Local Colors,'' a Roanoke area multicultural celebration, will take place April 21 from noon to 5 p.m. in downtown Roanoke.

The event opens with a Parade of Nations leading to the Roanoke City Market. The streets surrounding the market will be filled with music, arts and crafts, entertainment, storytelling, children's games, an international fashion show and displays from more than 30 ethnic and cultural groups.

Gallery 3 will display and sell Oriental art. Studios on the Square will offer space for display of art work by artists representing other countries from April 3 to May 18. Interested artists may submit slides or photos of their work to these businesses.

Celebrating the Oscars

Roanoke Festival in the Park will host ``A Night at the Academy Awards'' on March 25 at the Cinema USA theater at Crossroads Mall.

The evening will feature a live broadcast on the Academy Awards in one theater. The second theater will host movie clips and highlights from previous award winners.

Fans will be able to rub elbows with several ``stars'' through the artistry of ``Celebrity Heads,'' full-head masks resembling the stars. Photo opportunities will be available.

A fashion show will feature vintage clothing as well as glitzy attire.

A silent auction of movie memories will offer ``Dinner & A Movie'' packages from area restaurants, movie posters and other items.

The event is a black-tie fund raiser for the festival's scholarship program.

Tickets are $20 per person at the festival office (342-2640) and from the NW Federal Credit Union, Cinema USA or 309 First Street Food & Drink.

Author to visit

The Virginia Press Women are presenting children's writer and Roanoke resident Nancy Ruth Patterson on Sunday, ``Meet-the-Author Day,'' from 1-3 p.m. at the Roanoke Airport Marriott Hotel.

Patterson is the author of ``The Christmas Cup,'' which was adapted for the theater and performed at Mill Mountain Theatre, and ``The Shiniest Rock of All.''

The $11.50 cost (with tip) includes brunch and the program.

Wynona concert

Tickets for a Wynona concert at the Salem Civic Center on May 1, will go on sale Saturday at the civic center box office and Ticketmaster locations.

Reserved seats are $22.50.
