Vinton renews lease on its Bedford farm

The Town of Vinton has renewed the lease on a Bedford County farm that the town bought about 20 years ago for a reservoir.

Ferris B. Booth, who has farmed the land for a number of years, has signed a lease for another year. The town rents the farm to him for $1,500 a year.

Vinton Town Manager Clay B. Goodman said the town has learned that the property, known as the Pedigo Farm, is not suitable as a reservoir.

Several years ago members of Town Council said they would like to sell the farm, Goodman said, but so far it has not been put on the market.

The 300-acre farm is off Hardy Road, near Stewartsville.

35 seek 2 jobs in Town of Vinton

Twenty-two people have applied for the finance director/treasurer job in Vinton, and 13 are seeking the assistant town manager/engineer position.

Interviewing already already begun for both positions.

Most of the applicants for the finance job are from the Roanoke Valley but one is employed in Delaware. Also, one of the applicants works for the Town of Vinton, according to an announcement from the town manager's office.

Of the 13 applicants for the assistant town manager's post, one is working in Washington and one in Pennsylvania. The others are now working in the Roanoke Valley or Southwest Virginia.

Town Council will appoint the finance director. The assistant town manager's post will be filled by an appointment by Town Manager Clay Goodman.

Both positions became vacant because of resignations. Greg Secrist, assistant town manager, is leaving to work with the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, and Joan Furbish, finance director, is moving to New Zealand, where her husband has taken a job as a college counselor.
