APGAR, Hazel Shelor, 90, of Elliston, died Thursday, March 21, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter R. Apgar. She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Glock; sons and daughters-in-law, Frederick and Jeanette Apgar, Donald and Mildred Apgar, Michael and Charlotte Apgar; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Kyle a nd Doris Shelor; very special friend, Annie Mae Creasey and Hattie Mays. AUSTIN, Robert Franklin, 41, of Buena Vista, died Thursday, March 21, 1996, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke. Born March 31, 1954, in Rockbridge County, he was the son of Albert Austin of Natural Bridge Station, and the late Bessie Jenkins Austin. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church. Besides his father, he is survived by his wife, Carol Austin, Buena Vista,; two daughters, Melody Austin, Raphine, Bobbi Lyn Austin, Buena Vista; two sisters, Karen Mathison, Natural Bridge Station, Susan Knick, Glasgow; one brother, David Austin, Natural Bridge Station; one grandson, Allen Porterfield, Raphine. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, march 24, 1996, at 2 p.m. from the Victory Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dean Staton officiating. BLANKENSHIP, Moody, 88, of Hillsville, passed away Friday, March 22, 1996, at Eldercare of Hillsville. He was born June 19, 1907 in Carroll County, son of the late Fred Blankenship and Rebecca Hicks Blankenship. He is survived by his wife, Lura Blankenship of the home; son, Delton Blankenship, Hillsville; sisters, Hettie Gravely, Hillsville, Sue Cochran, Hillsvill e, Jessie Gardner, Hillsville; grandson and spouse, Danny and Susan Blankenship, Hillsville; great-granddaughter, Kasey Blankenship, Hillsville. BRYANT, Willie Mae, 70, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, March 20, 1996. Survivors include three daughters, Martha Woody, Louise Barksdale and Laura Baldwin, all of Roanoke; four sons, Arthur Baldwin, Memphis, Tenn., Richard Baldwin, Henry Baldwin and Randy Baldwin, all of Roanoke; two sisters, Helen Razor and Mary Baldwin; two brothers, Fred Baldwin and Thomas Baldwin, all of Youngstown, Ohio; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. DUDLEY, Christine D. (``Sock''), 71, of Radford, passed away Thursday, March 21, 1996, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was a retired Lab Technician with Flo Laboratories. FARMER, H. D., (``Bud""), 69 of Roanoke, died Thursday, March 21, 1996, in a local hospital. He enjoyed 47 years in the natural gas and propane distribution business. Family includes wife, Claudia B. Farmer; Mr. and Mrs. John (Jan) Norman of Bassett, Ms. Becky Farmer of Roanoke, Mr. and Mrs. Tim (Kay) Farrell; grandchildren, Lindsey and Casey Farrell, all of Lafayette, Ind. GROVE, Elizabeth F., 73, of Key Largo, Fla., and formerly of Stuarts Draft, died Friday, March 22, 1996 at the home of her daughter. She was born September 15, 1922 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by her husband, William W. Grove, who died November 10, 1982, a brother, Joseph Fontenot, Jr., who died in WWII. Survivors include her children, Robert Joseph Grove of Stuarts Draft, Linda Grove Hamm of Stuarts Draft, William Weeks Grove Jr. of Glen Allen and Kirkwood Craig Grove of Roanoke; and seven grandchildren. The service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 1996, at the Finley Memorial Presbyterian Church, Main St., Stuarts Draft, by the Rev. Henry Woodall. HARRY, Charles Raymond, 93, of Roanoke and Erwin, Tenn., passed away Friday, March 22, 1996, at Our Lady of the Valley. He was retired from the Clinchfield Railroad as Traffic Manager. He was a long time member of Erwin Presbyterian Church and a member of the Kiwanis. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Edith Huddleston Harry; two nephews, Charles William Harry of V ienna, Douglas Harry of Arlington; three great-nieces; three great-nephews; four sisters-in-law, Doris Reed of Salem, Wiser Harry of Arlington, Ethel Huddleston of Moneta, Frances Huddleston of Bedford. MARSHALL, Donald Gordon, 72, of Route 2, Ridgeway, died Thursday, March 21,1996, at his home. He was born September 21, 1923 in Portsmouth, Ohio to the late William (Buck) L. Marshall and Bertie Brittain Marshall. He retired from E. I. DuPont as Maintenance Supervisor with 36 years service, was a Navy veteran, serving with the Pacific Theatre and WWII, was a member and Elder of Horsepasture Christian Church and also an assistant Sunday School teacher. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn J. Marshall, of the home; five daughters, Mrs. John W. (Donna) Alvey, Hartford, Ky., Mrs. Dennis (Sharon) Baldwin, Horsepasture, Gloria Deatherage, Collinsville, Mrs. Donald (Judy) Day, Ridgeway, Mrs. Roy (Debbie) Clark, Martinsville; one son, Gerald L. McDONALD, Katharine Jane, 82, of Blacksburg, died Thursday, March 21, 1996, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born on March 2, 1914, in Blacksburg. She was the daughter of Charles Black and Kate McDonald. She was an employee of VPI & SU for over 40 years in the Agricultural Resear ch Division. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Richard McDonald and Charles Gordon McDonald, both of Blacksburg. She is survived by two nephews and their families. McGUIRE, Charlie Fagg, 81, of Radford, passed away Thursday, March 21, 19 96. He was born in Montgomery County and was the son of the late Virginia Lou and Sandy Alexander McGuire. He was a retired telegraph operator with 30 years service for Norfolk and Western Railway. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Okie Phillips McGuire; three daughters and sons-in-law, Eva M. and Tom Owen, Dublin, Mary M. Shanholtz and Dr. Vernon Shanholtz, Christiansburg, and Catherine M. Cox, Radford; eight grandchildren, Diane S. Hartt and her husband, Dr. Will Hartt, of Inver Grove, Minn., Dawn S. NOLEN, Helen Angle, ``ageless"", of Ferrum, passed away Thursday, March 21, 1996. Wife, mother, grandmother, and a friend to all young and old, she was an active member of Saint James United Methodist Church. Throughout her life, she was involved with teaching many of the residents in the Ferrum area, participated in the Franklin Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, was a member of the Order of the Easter Star, and assisted and volunteered her time at local nursing homes. She loved to play bridge, entertain and go out to eat. In the '50's, she was heavily involved with the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Jamestown Society, tracing her family roots back to the days of the Revolutionary War. She was loved by many and will be missed by all. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy W. Nolen; and a daughter, Doris Nolen Thomas. Surviving are one daughter and two sons-in-law, Edithor and Curt Dove, John H. Thomas; her grandchildren, Gwendolyn T. and Charles Hill, John and Bruce Thomas. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Edward J. Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials to the Ferrum Fire and Rescue Squad. RUCKER, Nannie Bell, 89, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, March 20, 1996. She was the widow of Robert B. Rucker and is survived by two daughters, Laura Stancill, Greenville, N.C. and Violet Wright, Roanoke; one son, Sherman Rucker, Roanoke; one sister, Elizabeth Holly, Bristol; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren. SMITH, James Leonard Jr., 71, of Roanoke, died Friday, March 22, 1996. He was the son of the late James Leonard Smith Sr. and is survived by his mother, Cora Jamison Smith Hunt, Roanoke. Also surviving are his wife of 46 years, Theresa Custer Smith; a son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Teresa Smith, Cohutta, Ga.; a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Alton Dooley, Roanoke; one grandson, Andrew Smith; one granddaughter, Rebecca Smith, both of Cohutta, Ga.; one stepgrandson, Alton Cline Dooley Jr. and wife, Brett, Baton Rouge, La.; one stepgranddaughter, Melissa Dooley Gray, Phoenix, Ariz.; two stepgreat-grandsons, Jacob Gray, Phoenix, Ariz., Timothy Dooley, Baton Rouge, La.; one brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Jean Smith, Slagle, La.; three nieces; one nephew; two great-nephews; three great-nieces. Jim retired from the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control System in 1988 with 40 years service. He also retired from the United States Army and the Virginia National Guard with 23 years service. During Wor ld War II, he served with the 233rd AAA Searchlight Battalion in Fiji, New Guinea and the Philippines. He joined the 116th Infantry, 29th Division of the Virginia National Guard in 1947 and retired in 1968. Jim was a charter member of Connelly Memorial Baptist Church and was also a member of the 29th Division Association and VFW Post #2157 of Bedford. Funeral services will be conducted at Oakey's North Chapel 1 p.m. Monday by the Rev. G. William Foster and the Rev. R. Bruce Griffith Jr. Burial will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. Friends may call at Oakey's North Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Lung Association, the American Heart Association, or the American Cancer Society.

SPANGLER, Dorn Odell, 84, of Route 2, Meadows of Dan, died Friday morning, March 22, 1996, at R. J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Patrick County on January 17, 1912, to the late Frank Spangler and the late Lottie Spangler. In addition to his parents, Mr. Spangler was preceded in death by a brother, Allen Spangler. Mr. Spangler retired after serving as the Superintendent of Schools for Patrick County from 1963 through 1977. He was a member of Mayberry Presbyterian Church, former member of Stuart Rotary Club, a former coach and teacher , and the former Director of Instruction for the Patrick County School System. Mr. Spangler is survived by his wife, Gaynelle Reynolds Spangler of the home; two daughters, Phyllis Spangler Bryant and Sylvia Spangler Hawkins, both of Chatham; two sons, Larry Spangler of Stuart, and Terry Spangler of Richmond; two sisters, Jeanette Shelor of Meadows of Dan, and Myrtle Yeatts of Martinsville; and two grandchildren, Elizabeth Spangler and Allison Spangler. Funeral services for Mr. Spangler will be held at the Meadows of Dan Baptist Church Sunday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Clarence Marshall and the Rev. Jack Holland officiating. Burial will follow in the Spangler Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

TAYLOR, Ernest Junior, 86, of Covington, died Friday at the Brian Center Nursing Home in Low Moor, Va. He was born June 3, 1909 in Craig County, a son of the late Ernest Jackson and Rebecca Taylor. He is survived by two daughters, Erma Lipes and Mrs. Ralph (Betty) Price both of Covington; four sons, Ellis F. Taylor of Christiansburg, Curtis P. Taylor of Hot Springs, Herman R. Taylor, Sr. of Covington and Ralph E. Taylor of Martinsville; three half sisters, Elsie Campbell, Beulah Eppler and Nancy Pond all of Covington. Also surviving are fifteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Adam Smith officiating. Interment will be made in Humphries Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 until 8:30 at Arritt Funeral Home.
