ANNUAL 'STAMPEDE AND STROLL' IS SATURDAY

Runners, walkers, rollerbladers, dogs and dog owners are invited to participate in the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine's annual "Stampede and Stroll" Saturday at Virginia Tech. Events begin at 9 a.m. on Smithfield Plantation Road near the Virginia Tech Duck Pond.

The day's events include a 5K race at 9 a.m., a one-mile race for rollerbladers at 11:30 a.m. and a one-mile walk for dogs and their owners at 1 p.m. Contests, demonstrations and canine performances also are planned. New events this year include demonstrations of obedience dogs, police dogs and assistance dogs for the handicapped.

Prizes for the dog walk and run will be awarded to the top two finishers and to dogs in categories such as "Best Owner and Dog Resemblance," "Best Costume, "Best Pet Trick," "Most Unusual" and others. Judging for the various dog contest will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and prizes will be awarded after the dog walk at 1 p.m. The prizes range from dinners at local restaurants to shampoos and flea dips at local animal groomers and kennels.

Prizes also will be awarded in men's and women's competitive classes for the 5K event. All participants receive an official race T-shirt.

Advance registration for each race is $8. Registration at the site Saturday is $10 and will begin at 8 a.m. Forms are available at the college's veterinary teaching hospital, at local veterinary hospitals and sporting goods stores and at Virginia Tech's War Memorial gym. Part of the proceeds from the event will go to Morris Animal Foundation and Leader Dogs for the Blind.
