TEXAS TEAM RECOGNIZED FOR STEALING

In a game called after only three innings, Chireno High School set a national record on Wednesday with 80 stolen bases in a 34-4 victory over Tenaha in Chireno, Texas.

The Owls shattered the previous national high school record of 43 set 16 years ago by La Puente Baptist Temple Academy of California.

Each Chireno player had at least two stolen bases. Julian Rangel had 10 steals, one short of the national high school record. Rangel had a hit and three walks, scoring four times.

In other sports:

* U.S. shooters placed out of the medals for the second straight day in the Atlanta World Cup at the Wolf Creek Shooting Complex in Atlanta.

In men's free pistol, all three U.S. shooters scored high enough to advance to the preliminary round today. Radford resident Ben Amonette, who is a member of the Summer Olympic free pistol team, shot 552 of 600.

* The NBA, recognizing the popularity of the women's game, intends to start a new pro basketball league for them in the summer of 1997. NBA Commissioner David Stern promised details about television arrangements, the number of teams and the cities in which they will operate by July 1.
