Bank wants OK to open branch

Bank of Botetourt said it has applied to state and federal regulators for authority to open a branch at Perimeter East Commerce Center on U.S. 460 in east Roanoke County.

If approval is given, the branch would open next January. The 1,800-square-foot office will have four full-time employees, a drive-through window and an automated teller machine.

The bank already has offices at Buchanan, Daleville, Eagle Rock and Troutville with an operations center in Buchanan.

Panel to target health care

Rep. Bob Goodlatte, Del. Clifton "Chip" Woodrum and Dr. Ken Tuck, president-elect of the Medical Society of Virginia, will discuss the future of health care from federal, state and physician perspectives Monday at the Holiday Inn -Tanglewood.

The event is sponsored by the Roanoke Regional Medical Group Management Association, which has members from nearly 100 area physician groups.

The dinner meeting begins at 5:30, and panel talks will start at 7. A question-and-answer session will follow. Reservations can be made till 2 p.m. Friday with Yvonne Vaught at Valley Pathology Associates, 345-2146. Cost is $25.

Council cites design of lab

The Virginia Masonry Council has cited the design of the Western Regional Laboratory for the Department of Forensic Science Office of the Medical Examiner. The Roanoke facility is at 6600 Northside High School Road.

The award, which was given in the government construction category, went to the Richmond office of Dewberry & Davis, the facility's architect. The council said the exterior design effectively portrays the strength and security of law enforcement while maintaining a pleasing appearance.

The building was completed in August.

RICHMOND - Scott & Stringfellow Inc. said Tuesday that it will conduct a forum to encourage investment in Shenandoah Valley businesses. The ``Invest in the Valley Forum'' is set for May 29 at the Ingleside Resort in Staunton.

Scott & Stringfellow is a regional broker, investment banking and financial services firm with 28 offices in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and West Virginia.

RICHMOND - PaineWebber Inc., a Wall Street securities firm, is paying the state $136,432 to settle charges that it misled Virginia investors. The settlement grows out of a federal investigation into the company's sales of limited partnerships between 1986 and 1992.
