Perot party to meet for nominations

AUSTIN, Texas - With ballot positions secured in 11 states and petition drives under way in Texas and other states, Ross Perot's Reform Party is planning a high-tech national convention on Labor Day weekend to nominate candidates for president and vice president.

The site of the convention has not been decided, but party spokeswoman Sharon Holman said it will be held ``somewhere in mid-America.''

Timing of the confab, one week before the Republican National Convention, is tentative because at least eight states have objected to the date as being too late, even though some of those states have allowed Democrats to have late nominating events.

Although Perot has not declared himself to be a Reform Party presidential candidate, he could be nominated on the weekend of Aug. 31-Sept. 2. However, this week's edition of Newsweek magazine reported that former Colorado Gov. Richard Lamm, a Democrat, was being wooed by some Perot supporters.

Lamm confirmed he had been approached about running but insisted he isn't angling for the nomination.

Eleven states, including Virginia, already have verified that the Reform Party's presidential slate will have a place on their ballots.

More files on JFK to be made public

WASHINGTON - The FBI has transferred an additional 16,679 pages of its records on the assassination of President Kennedy to the National Archives, which will make them public next week.

The FBI announced Tuesday that the latest transfer contained FBI investigative files that were reviewed by the House Assassinations Committee in 1978-79. These files came from the FBI investigations of organized crime figures Angelo Bruno and Gabriel and Sam Mannarino, the bureau said.

The Archives will make the additional documents public at 9 a.m. May 14 at its College Park, Md., facility.
