VOICE OF THE VOTERS

Here's what some Roanoke voters had to say about why they voted the way they did:

FOR GREEN

``I like anyone who is not a lawyer. Someone said [Bowers] is an experienced politician. That is another reason not to vote for him. I voted for Green because I think he will make a good mayor.''

Walter Dickey

South Roanoke No. 2

FOR BOWERS

``It has been a learning experience for [Bowers] in this first term. He'll be better the next time. I just don't know the Green guy. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but I don't know anything about him.''

L.H. Smith

South Roanoke No. 1

FOR GREEN

``I feel he has a sense of integrity. I was ready for a change. [Bowers] has been there awhile. I just wanted a new mayor. There is no particular reason I want a change.''

Ann Masters

South Roanoke No. 2

FOR BOWERS

``I am satisfied with him. I think he has done a good job. Some people complain about him changing his position on a ward system, but I don't think Roanoke is ready for a ward system.''

George Penn

Villa Heights

FOR GREEN

``I think it's time for a change. You can't get the city to do anything if you have a problem ... if you live in certain sections. You write the mayor and he refers it to the city manager and he refers it to one of his assistants.''

June Cornelius

Raleigh Court No. 1

FOR BOWERS

``I think he has done a lot for the community. I've met him and he's very personable. I think he's trying to help people. Some people complain ... but I have no problem. He's getting my vote and the vote of my oldest daughter.''

Alice Kemp

Lincoln Terrace

FOR GREEN

``I voted for him mainly because he is a Republican. I vote for Republicans unless they are pro-choice on abortion or they take some other position I don't agree with. I agree with the Republicans on moral issues.''

Norris VanCleave

Jefferson No. 1

FOR BOWERS

``I think he deserves another term. He has visited Melrose Towers where I live and he's a very friendly person. I think he has done a good job.''

Flora Holland

Villa Heights
