NO OPPOSITION TO VINTON BUDGET

No one turned out for a public hearing on Vinton's proposed 1996-97 fiscal budget of nearly $5.9 million, which is lower than this year's and won't require a tax increase.

Clay Goodman, town manager, said the budget is about $250,000 lower than the one for the present fiscal year.

One reason, he said, is that about $100,000 was removed from the capital improvement fund for the coming year because projects were shifted.

The current year's budget is higher than average because several improvement projects included in it were not done. That means the funds for them can be eliminated from the new budget.

Goodman put council members on notice that before this calendar year is over they may need to consider an increase in water and sewer service rates and connection fees. He did not offer any specifics.

On another matter, Mayor Charles Hill reminded council and staff members that the next in a series of meetings between local government officials will be on June 3 at noon at the Vinton War Memorial. At that session, Vinton and Roanoke officials will discuss joint concerns.
