BHS STUDENT JOINS ROANOKE YOUTH SYMPHONY

A Blacksburg High School student recently was selected to join the Roanoke Youth Symphony. Kirsten Egger, a sophomore, plays the clarinet. She is a member of the high school's symphonic band and is an All-District Band member.

During the 1994-95 school year, while she and her family were at the Virginia Tech Center for European Studies and Architecture in Switzerland, she played with the Riva San Vitale Philharmonic, the music ensemble at the school she attended. Egger also plays tennis. She is the daughter of Dorothy and Gene Egger of Blacksburg.

A $750 scholarship recently was presented to Lee Ellen Akers by the New River Chapter of Professional Secretaries International. Akers is a graduating senior at Christiansburg High School. She plans to attend the National Business College in the fall. She is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and the Vocational Honors Society.

Kira Jelincic of Radford High School has been accepted to study vocal performance at the School of Music at the North Carolina School for the Arts. Jelincic is a senior and is actively involved with Radford High's chorus. This spring she was selected to the All Virginia chorus. She also has studied the piano for eight years. She is the daughter of Frano and Dagmar Jelincic of Radford.

Three area students recently participated in the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth Program. Chris Schumann, Jeffrey Skiles and Joshua Skiles are students at Community Christian Academy. They qualified for the program by scoring in the top 3 percent in the nation on their grade-level achievement tests.

Schumann, a sixth-grader, also took the PLUS Academic Abilities Assessment test as part of the program. He scored in the top 15 percent.

Jeffrey and Joshua Skiles, both seventh-graders, took the Scholastic Aptitude Test, which usually is taken by college-bound high school students. Jeffrey scored 1120 and Joshua scored 1050; the 1995 SAT average for high school students was 1013.

The students were recognized by the university for their high scores and are qualified for the program's summer and distance learning classes.

Jeffrey and Joshua Skiles are the sons of Barry and Faith Skiles of Floyd; Schumann is the son of David and Susy Schumann of Christiansburg.

A video created by parents of the Blacksburg New School will be featured on Channel 2 Wednesday at 7 p.m. The video highlights some of the school's activities. It also coincides with the school's 25th anniversary.
