AGEE, CARTER AND HOPKINS TOP QUALIFIERS

Former Northside High star Brian Agee and Ridgeway's Brad Carter paced zone qualifying Monday at Roanoke Country Club for the 83rd VSGA Men's State Amateur golf championship.

Agee and Carter posted rounds of 1-under 70 to lead 75 qualifiers bidding for 15 available berths in the State Am, which will be played July 1-5 at The Homestead Resort's Cascades Course.

Roanoke's Ryan Ketron and Nick Varney, and Pearisburg's Stewart Gillespie tied for third at 71. Wesley Cothran of Forest and Charlie Keffer of Roanoke tied for sixth at 72.

Mark Funderburke, Scott Hunter, Jeff Lynch, Andy Miller, Tony Montgomery, Josh Points and Anthony Smith all qualified with 73s. Floyd's Bobby Clark (74) took the final spot.

Ketron, Varney, Cothran, Keffer and Points also qualified for the AMF-Signet Open, to be played July 18-21 at Willow Oaks Country Club in Richmond. Botetourt's Danny Hopkins, who paced Open qualifiers with a 70, and Dan Keffer (72) captured the other two available spots among the 31 contestants.

Qualifying at RCC was shortened from the normal 36-hole format to 18 holes because of rain.

In other golf in the region:

Lexington's David Brogan (142) and J.W. Entsminger (148) each earned berths in both the Am and Open in qualifying at Richmond's Hermitage Country Club. Virginia Tech's Curtis Deal (148) qualified for both events at Sleepy Hole in Suffolk.

Roanoke's Brandon LaCroix fired a 3-over-par 73 at Fincastle Country Club in Bluefield to capture the qualifying medal in zone qualifying for the Aug. 6-8 VSGA Junior boys golf championship.

LaCroix paced 11 players vying for five spots in the tournament that will be contested at Birdwood Golf Club in Charlottesville. Lexington's George Pickral (75) and Wytheville Brian Love (80) claimed two of the other four spots.

Don Ryder and Mark Fry of The Homestead combined for a 69 to capture third place in the Middle Atlantic PGA's Southern Chapter Pro-Assistant Championship at Williamsburg Country Club.
