HAYES SEAY MATTERN & MATTERN INC. in Roanoke has announced that Engineering News-Record magazine has named it to the top 100 "Pure" Designer firms. A pure designer is a professional firm that provides architectural and engineering services exclusively, rather than a combination of design and construction.

Also, World Architecture magazine has recognized the firm as being among the top architectural firms in the world in several categories, including the top 200 largest architectural practices, top global fee earners, top 25 designers in fee growth, and top 25 designers in the defense industry.

LARRY COLEMAN of Roanoke has been named Security Pacific Financial Services' Region Manager of the Year for the Mid-Atlantic Division. Coleman oversees the company's offices in Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia. Coleman is a three-time winner of Security Pacific's Manager of the Year award and was among the company's top performers of 1995.

WILLIAM H. SPENCER III of Roanoke has qualified for membership in the 1996 Franklin Million Dollar Conference, an elite organization of national sales and management leaders for The Franklin Life Insurance Co. of Springfield, Ill. In qualifying, Spencer has been recognized as one of the company's most successful agency associates.

F. COURTNEY HOGE of Roanoke has been named a Knight of the Million Dollar Round Table Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Million Dollar Round Table. Hoge attained membership by making significant contributions to the organization. Membership in MDRT represents the top 6 percent of all life insurance producers worldwide and is recognized internationally as the standard of excellence in life insurance sales performance.

MOTLEY & ASSOCIATES of Roanoke won an Excellence in Masonry Design award in the commercial and/or industrial category for its design of Kipps Elementary School in Blacksburg. At the Virginia Masonry Council's design seminar for professionals earlier this year. Benjamin S. Motley was the architect on the project.

THE SALEM MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION has announced its officers and board members for 1996: president, Sally Nunley of Grandma's Attic; vice president, Bob Bower of Commonwealth Inspection Services; secretary, Carole Brackman of Multimedia Creations; and treasurer, Patrick Smith of Robert Cadd & Co. New directors are David Lewis of Northwest True Value Hardware; Larry Brewer of The Reproduction Shop; Roger Bryant of the Salem Phone Directory; Howard "Mooch" Semones of Spartan Silk Screen; and Brenda Bower of Amrhein's Brides, Formals and Fine Jewelry.

KAREN R. DINKEL of Roanoke has been awarded the Certificate in General Insurance by the Insurance Institute of America. Earning the certificate requires completion of three courses and national examinations. Dinkel is a commercial lines processor at Thomas Rutherfoord Inc. in Roanoke.

PATTON COLES has been named Producer of the Year for the third consecutive year by Acordia of West Virginia, an insurance company serving West Virginia, Virginia and eastern Kentucky.

DENNIS LANGFORD of Roanoke has retired from Fairmont Temper after 43 years of service. Langford joined the company in 1953 in Fairmont, and was assigned to Chicago in the 1950s. Langford was assigned to the New York office in 1963. He covered the East Coast, and was transferred to Virginia in 1965.

KEVIN KAYS of Roanoke has been named Rookie of the Year at Peoples Security Insurance for the Shenandoah Region.

LEMUEL H. NEWSOME has been named to the Norandex 1996 Leadership Council. Newsome is manager of the Roanoke office of Norandex Inc., a division of Fibreboard Corp., which manufactures vinyl siding and sells other exterior building products. Newsome has been with the company for 13 years and has been on the Norandex Leadership Council the last five years by meeting sales and management goals.

CHARLENE S. McCADDEN, a registered nurse and infection control practitioner at the Salem VA Medical Center, has met the requirements for certification in infection control by the Certification Board of Infection Control.

MICHAEL F. HUGHES, formerly of Roanoke, has been promoted to assistant vice president at Signet Bank. He manages the Virginia Beach mortgage office and oversees loan origination and production in the Tidewater area. Hughes was a teacher and coach with the Roanoke school system and an assistant track coach at Virginia Tech before going into the financial services industry.

DR. DARRELL F. POWLEDGE of Lewis-Gale Clinic in Salem is among 52 physicians selected for the 1996 Class of Fellows by the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, an international organization that promotes health and safety of people in the workplace and environment through preventive medicine, clinical practice, research and education.

DONNY JULIAN of Roanoke has been selected Route Salesperson for the fourth quarter by Shenandoah Valley Water Co. The award is based on excellent service, new accounts, driving safety and accuracy. Julian was also named 1992's Route Salesperson of the year by the International Bottled Water Association.

THE 1995 COMMISSIONER'S AWARD was given to major supporters of Virginia agriculture. The award recognizes any retailer, wholesaler, distributor, producer or processor that makes a significant contribution to Virginia agriculture. Kroger of Roanoke received the award for their strong and consistent support of Virginia agricultural producers and their participation in the Virginia's Finest trademark program.
