BEAMER HANDS $50K BACK TO TECH

Three days after being rewarded with a new five-year contract, Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer has decided to give something back to the university.

Beamer and his wife Cheryl presented the school with a $50,000 gift, earmarked towards a proposed $8 million all-purpose facility in the works for Tech athletics.

``With the recent contract extention granted me, the university has shown a commitment to our football program,'' said Beamer in a statement released by the school. ``I also have a strong commitment to Virginia Tech.

``With that said, what is critical for the growth of this program is a new all-purpose facility. I don't feel comfortable asking someone for something when I'm not giving my best.''

The Beamers also gave the university $50,000 in 1991.

Plans call for construction of the new all-purpose facility to begin by Nov.1.

* Longtime Radford University restricted earnings men's basketball coach Bill Lilly has earned a title to go with his full-time workload.

Lilly, who came to Radford in 1987, replaces Dave Dickerson, who left for Marshall earlier this spring and this week joined Gary Williams' staff at Maryland.

``He's been extremely loyal to Radford,'' said Highlanders coach Ron Bradley. ``The players are behind him, so it was a no-brainer'' to promote him.

Under new NCAA rules that limit a restricted earnings coach's tenure to five years in that position, Lilly could not have remained as a part-timer on Bradley's staff. As a full-time assistant, he will add recruiting to his duties. Lilly, who first coached with Joe Davis at Radford, is the only person to have coached under all three head coaches since the program moved to NCAA Division I.

Bradley said he may not try to fill the restricted earnings position this year.

In a related matter, graduated swingman Jason Lansdown has signed a contract to play professionally in Holland. Lansdown was voted Radford's most valuable player this past season and led the team in scoring (16.2 points per game) and free-throw shooting (82 percent).

* Home football games with Texas, Clemson and North Carolina, combined with already high sales, is expected to give Virginia a record sale of season tickets.

Because of the high season ticket sales, currently at 24,039, and the ticket commitment to Texas, Clemson and UNC, single game tickets will not be available for those games. Tickets for those games will only be available on a season ticket package.

UVa's football season ticket record is 24,514 in 1992. School officials expect this year's sale to break the 25,000 mark.

Season tickets are $132 each and still are available by calling 1-800-542-8821. Single game tickets for Virginia's home games with Central Michigan, Maryland and N.C. State go on sale July 8. Tickets for each of UVa's road games already are on sale.

Yancey, the reigning State Junior champion, advanced with a 7-and-6 romp over Earlysville's Andy Dofflemeyer and a come-from-behind 1-up win in 21 holes over Andrew Wymer of New Hope.
