LOA's health insurance counselors were inducted into the Roanoke County Senior Citizen Hall of Fame on June 11 for their volunteer efforts helping seniors select appropriate health insurance coverage and understand medical bills. The program's 14 volunteers have helped 215 local seniors save an estimated $81,000 this year. In May, the volunteer program also won second place in the J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award.

The Salvation Army's Turning Point Shelter for Abused Women and Children now has a new heavy-duty playground complex equipped with swings, bridges, forts, climbing ropes, a slide and a clubhouse thanks to the Shenandoah Chapter of the GE Elfun Society and Troop 449 of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The project is the brainchild of Steven Squires, son of Ron and Jeannette Squires, who began the project to complete requirements for the Eagle Scout Award. Thirty-three volunteers donated 700 man-hours to complete the $1,450 project.
