ASSAULT IN COIN LAUNDRY INJURES MAN ANOTHER MAN HIT WHILE WALKING DOG

A Roanoke man remains in serious condition after he was assaulted at a Southwest coin laundry Saturday evening.

Willard Alfred Marston, 62, of Day Avenue Southwest was approached by another man at the laundry in the 700 block of Fifth Street about 6:17 p.m.

A witness told police that Larry Kenneth Parady II, 35, of Day Avenue began to curse Marston and then struck him with his fist. Marston fell backward and struck his head on the pavement, said Roanoke police Lt. W.J. Beason.

Marston was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He had not regained consciousness Sunday, when a detective tried to speak with him.

Parady was charged with malicious wounding and was being held in the Roanoke City jail without bond Sunday night awaiting arraignment today, said Lt. Billingsley, who refused to give his full name.

Later Saturday night, Roanoke police responding to a suspicious circumstances call in the 2000 block of Bunche Drive Northwest about 1:30 a.m. found a man who had been attacked.

Lee C. Harrington, 34, of Hunt Avenue Northwest told police four men had dragged him from his car and beaten him. Police found Harrington's wallet and its contents scattered on the ground, Beason said.

A witness gave police a description of Harrington's car, which was missing from the scene. The car was recovered at the Washington Park pool, Beason said.

Also on Saturday night, a man was beaten while walking his dog in the 600 block of Eighth Street Southwest.

Ralph W. Erke, 34, of Marshall Avenue Southwest, was walking his dog past a house when three men sitting on the porch began to yell at him, Beason said.

The men ran after Erke and kicked his dog. One man struck Erke with the metal end of a mop handle, resulting in a large gash on the top of his head, Beason said.

Erke was able to get to a pay phone and call police.

A Roanoke police officer searched the area and located a man with blood on his hands and shirt, who fit the description of Erke's assailant. The man was identified by Erke, who was brought to the scene on his way to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Beason said.

Ronald E. Talbert, 21, of Windsor Avenue Southwest was charged with malicious wounding and assuming the name of another after giving the officer a false name, Beason said.

Talbert was being held without bond in the Roanoke City Jail Sunday, awaiting arraignment today. Billingsley said Talbert is an alias and Ronnie D. Jones is the prisoner's real name.

Erke was treated at Roanoke Memorial and released, said J.B. Currie, nursing supervisor.
