ALL'S FAIR THAT STARTS FAIR

What's a country fair without squealing pigs, homemade apple pies, Ferris wheels and lots of good country music?

A bust, that's what.

Expect a blast - not a bust - when the New River Valley Fair takes flight next week.

The fair, now in its 44th year, features a great lineup of rising country music stars, as well as some country music legends.

Wade Hayes, Ty England and Jeff Carson top the list of hot new singers at the fair. Lisa Daggs and Ken Holloway - new faces on the Christian country music scene - will be performing, too.

Grand Ole Opry stars Jim & Jesse will bring the Virginia Boys to the grandstand for a concert with the Osborne Brothers. The renowned old-time bluegrass musicians will play together in a special show Tuesday.

The musical entertainment is just part of the week's fun. Mike Clark's Lion and Tiger Show, a Family Animal Exhibit and (of course!) rousing rides are among the daily attractions.

An antique tractor pull is one of the preliminary activities Saturday to get the fair rolling. The midway opens Monday with carnival rides each day through Aug. 3.

Exhibit halls are open nightly, 5 to 10:30 p.m., starting Monday. The halls will open early at 1 p.m. Tuesday and Aug. 3. Flowers, baked goods, garden vegetables, needlework, artwork and handmade crafts are among the items on display throughout the week.

Livestock shows are scheduled each day, too. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will sponsor livestock competitions for youths. Winners automatically qualify for the state fair.

For dates, times and admission fees to all events at the New River Valley Fair, see the schedule in today's Current.
