WHO, WHEN & WHERE

Governor's awards

Gov. George Allen has announced the Governor's and First Lady's Awards for Community Service and Volunteerism to recognize the efforts of community-based organizations and individuals who give of their time, talents and energy.

A new program, the Virginia Youth Service Awards, will honor exemplary young Virginians whose volunteer work has made a positive impact on their communities.

This year's theme is community building - volunteer and community service efforts that contribute to safe, harmonious communities with strong infrastructures that provide affordable housing and health care, effective transportation systems and that are rich in educational, cultural and recreational activities.

Groups may be nominated in one of eight categories: large business, small business, religious institutions, media outlets, foundations, youth groups, senior groups and group collaboration. Individuals whose volunteer efforts strengthen the community may be nominated for the Outstanding Volunteer Award.

The First Lady's Award will be presented to families who volunteer together for a specific project or organization that helps strengthen communities.

The deadline for nominations is Aug. 9. For a nomination application, call (800) 638-3839, (804) 692-7956 or fax (804) 692-1999.

Teen flea market

A Teen Flea Market will be held Aug. 10, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Roanoke County Teen Center.

Students in grades 6-12 and their parents may rent table space for $1. Reservations are due by Aug. 8.

Buying, selling and trading are permitted.

The center at 3738 Brambleton Ave. S.W. in Roanoke County, across from Cave Spring Corners. For reservations and more information, call 772-2058.

Blow heat away

Heat waves are the second-leading cause of weather-related deaths.

Older people, especially those with medical conditions, are at risk of heat stroke or other heat-related illnesses.

Fan Care is a statewide cooperative effort of Virginia Power and the Virginia Department of Aging. Last summer, more than 350 fans were distributed to people in the Roanoke Valley.

If you know someone who needs a fan, call 345-0451.

MS Home Tour Gala

This year the National Multiple Sclerosis Society's Home Tour Gala is ``Circus Extravaganza,'' to be held Sept. 21 at The Waterfront at Smith Mountain Lake. It will feature a ringmaster and cages filled with stuffed animals.

The black-tie-optional affair will include music by The Kings and an auction featuring everything from fine art to get-away vacations.

Ten lake homes will be featured on this year's home tour, to be held Oct. 4-6, including some first-time tour residences. In addition, at each home will host a person who has been touched by multiple sclerosis so that visitors may ask questions of someone who knows MS first-hand.

Tickets go on sale Aug. 1. Advance tickets are $10 and are good all three days of the tour. Visitors can reach homes by boat or car.

Forty percent of gala and tour ticket sales benefit MS research; the remainder helps those in the Roanoke Valley who have been affected by the disease.

Volunteers are needed to serve on a variety of committees; call 297-8687. For more information on MS, call (800) 451-0373.
