BIG INNING KEY TO SALEM LOSS

THE AVALANCHE is thwarted again as the Wilmington Blue Rocks score five runs in the third inning and win 8-3.

A big inning once again was the difference Saturday night as the Wilmington Blue Rocks defeated the Salem Avalanche 8-3 in a Carolina League baseball game.

Wilmington scored five runs in the third inning to negate a 2-0 lead the Avalanche forged in the first inning.

The key blows for the Blue Rocks were a home run by Brian Teeters and a two-run double by Matt Smith. Wilmington used a six-run inning to beat the Avalanche in the first game of the series Friday night.

Chandler Martin (0-5) absorbed the loss for Salem, giving up all eight Wilmington runs in four innings.

The Avalanche seemed poised for a big inning of its own when the first five batters reached base against Wilmington starter Kevin Hodges, three on walks and two on hits. However, Hodges got out of the jam by inducing a double-play grounder and yielded only two runs.
