Art on the Green

The Lexington Downtown Development Association seeks artists for its third annual Art on the Green juried show, to be held Oct. 5, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., on Hopkins Green.

The event is at low cost to artists, with no commission due on sales. Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded.

Artists are invited to submit three to six slides of recent work for a $20 entry fee. Submission deadline is Aug. 1. Acceptance notifications will be given by Sept. 1.

Roanoke College exhibit

Entries for Roanoke College's biennial juried exhibition will be accepted Aug. 16, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., and Aug. 17, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at the college's Olin Hall Galleries.

The competition is open to artists living within a 100-mile radius of Roanoke College or the state of Virginia. Art work, including painting, sculpture, graphics, ceramics, textiles, mixed media and photography, must be original and executed within the past two years. A maximum of three works may be submitted. Entry fee is $15 for up to three works.

Cash prizes will be awarded.

A reception will open the exhibit on Aug. 25, 1-3 p.m. The exhibit will close on Oct. 10.

Laban Johnson scholarship

The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge has announced establishment of the Laban Johnson Arts Scholarship, to be awarded annually to students who want to expand their experiences in the performing, literary or visual arts.

Johnson, a former Perry F. Kendig Award recipient, is a past board member of the council, former high school teacher and co-host of WBRA-TV's ``Cookin' Cheap.'' He recently retired as head of the Roanoke City Special Events Committee.

Nine area high school students have been selected to receive the 1996 scholarships: Elizabeth Davis, Daniel Mullen, Dee Thepsimuong, Robert Johnson and Amy Cunningham, Patrick Henry High School, Roanoke; Bradley Scott Cooper of Blacksburg High School; Patrick Bishop, Salem High School; Claire Good, William Fleming High School, Roanoke; and Sarah Airey, Northside High School, Roanoke.

Funds are supported by ticket proceeds from Perry F. Kendig award receptions and by donations.

Kendig arts awards

Maxine Hunt and the Norfolk Southern Foundation will be honored for their commitment and support of arts and cultural activities in the Roanoke Valley with this year's Perry F. Kendig Award for Outstanding Support of the Arts.

Hunt has served as president of Friends of the Roanoke Symphony and served on its executive and fund-raising committees. She has been director of music of and pianist for the senior choir of Hill Street Baptist Church for 32 years and was the recipient of the 1989 education award of the Roanoke branch of the NAACP.

The Norfolk Southern Foundation has underwritten many programs for a vast array of the area's cultural organizations. Its efforts include direct financial support, in-kind donations of services and materials and matching gifts of employee donations.

The award was established 11 years ago and in named for the late arts patron and president of Roanoke College. A reception will be held Aug. 27, 5:30-7:30 p.m., at the home of Hollins College President Janet Rasmussen. For more information or for tickets, call 342-5790.

Lynchburg photo show

The 1966 Area Juried Photography Show, open to photographers within 150 miles of Lynchburg, will be on display in the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center's Dillard Gallery Sept. 8-Oct. 12.

Artists may submit up to three entries of original, photographically derived works completed since January 1993.

Entries should be delivered to the Center Aug. 30, noon-4 p.m., or Aug. 31, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The entry fee is $15.

Teens in the movies

``Adolescence in American Cinema'' will be examined at a workshop Aug. 3, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg.

The event is sponsored by the C.G. Jung Society of Southwest Virginia. Films clips will be used to illustrate a Jungian perspective on adolescent psychology and development.

The workshop will be held in room 2123, Amherst Hall.
