BARNES, Doris Jean Cooper, 69, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, August 4, 1996. Mrs. Barnes was a retired teacher from Colonial Elementary School in Botetourt County, and was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Jefferson Barnes. She is survived by a son, George Barnes; nieces, Delinda Gloss, Dawn Gloss; nephews, Danny Gloss, Doug Gloss; sister-in-law, Gladys Barnes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m . Thursday, August 8, 1996 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John Hawn officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. BOURNE, Lenora H. 85, of Birdmont Health Care Center, Wytheville, and formerly of Elk Creek, Va., passed away Monday, August 5, 1996 at the Birdmont Health Care Center, Wytheville. Born August 7, 1910 at Sugar Grove, Va. to Enoch Cisiro Hamm and Charity Ann Brown Hamm, she was a member of Jerusalem United Methodist Church, where she was actively involved in previous years teaching Sunday School and working in the W. M. U. Survivors include her husband of 601/2 years, Henry S. Bourne, Birdmont Retirement Center, Wytheville; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Hobert Perdue, Jr., Lenoir City, TN.; daughter-in-law, Mary Nell Bourne, Wytheville; grandchildren and a granddaughter-in-law, Mitchell and Stephanie Perdue, both of Lenoir City, Tn., Graham Bourne, Leesburg, Fla., Louis and Vicki Bourne, Toccoa, Ga.; sister, Clydas Keesling, Richmond; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, August 8, 1996 at 11 a.m. in the Jerusalem United Methodist Church, with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Virginia Eminhizer and Dr. James Vaught are officiating. The body is at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral home, Independence, Va., where the family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 to 9 p.m. The body will lie in state at the church thirty minutes preceding the funeral service. DOSS, Clara Manning, 94, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, August 5, 1996 at Friendship Manor following a lengthy illness. Born in Botetourt County, she was the daughter of the late Griffith M. and Mattie Hurt Manning of Floyd. She was predeceased by her husb and, Ernest L. (``Jack'') Doss. Mrs. Doss was the last member of her immediate family and was a longtime member of the First Church of the Brethren, Roanoke. Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Emily Manning, Salem, Virginia M. Doss, Charlotte, N.C.; four nephews, Ebbie L. Manning, Blue Ridge, Barry Firebaugh, Abingdon, Dr. James L. Doss, Winston-Salem, N.C., Raymond E. ECHOLS, Howard E., 73, of Roanoke, died Monday, August 5, 1996, in a Salem hospital. He was retired from Sunshine Biscuit Company and Mick-or-Mack Stores, and a veteran of World War II, a lifelong member of West End United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Stacy Johnson. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Smith Echols; daughters, Nancy and husband, Richard J. Stark, of Charlotte, N.C., Mary and husband, James M. (Monty) Johnson, of Vinton; sons, Robert and wife, Kirk, of Danville, Stephen and wife, Claudia, of Delray Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Erika Stark, Andrew Stark, Ruth Echols, Robert Echols; mother, Elizabeth C. HILL, Nancy Waldron, 84, of Salem, died on Tuesday, August 6, 1996 in a local nursing home. A lifelong Salem resident and member of New Hope Presbyterian Church. She is preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, Sidney and Melvin Waldron; two sisters, Dolly St. Clair and Gay Buck. Survivors include her husband, Herman Hill Sr.; one son, Herman T. Hill Jr.; two sisters, Alice Buck and Elizabeth Combs; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Funera l services will be held on Thursday, August 8, 1996 at 2 p.m. in the John M. KEATLEY, Andrew Joseph, (``Andy""), 77, of Wheatland Hills Apartments, #H-3, Fairlawn, passed on to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, August 6, 1996, at Pulaski Community Hospital. For the past two years, he demonstrated to all his great faith and courage. He was born on July 28, 1919, in Matewan, W.Va. He served as a sergeant in the United States Army during World War II with the 2nd Chemical Mortar Battalion. Upon his honorable discharge in 1945, he received the Good Conduct Metal, American Defense Service Medal, and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with six bronze stars and one arrowhead. He was a retired employee of RAAP in Radford with 30 years of service. He served as deacon and treasurer at First Baptist Church of Pulaski. He was a current member of Fairlawn Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Jean Scott Keatley of Fairlawn; two daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and the Rev. Danny Collins of Fairlawn and Andrea and David Hoover of Kingsport, Tenn., and four grandsons, Andy Collins and wife Michelle of Raleigh, N.C., Brad Collins of Angier, N.C., and Mike Hoover and Rob Hoover of Kingsport, Tenn. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from Fairlawn Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Addington and the Rev. Danny W. Collins officiating. KEATTS, Christine Anna Pannell, 69, of Roanoke, died Sunday, August 4, 1996 in a local hospital. Mrs. Keatts was a native of Gretna, Va., the daughter of the late Squire and Louise Pannell. She was a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church, where she served on the Deaconess Board, Progressive Adult Club, Missionary Circle and the Pastor's Aide. She was preceded in death by her son, Ronald Keatts. Survivors include her husband, Walter Keatts, Roanoke; two daughters, Deloris K. (James) Lark, and Eloise K. (Charles) Nelson, all of Roanoke; three sisters, Hossie Lyons, Oxen Hill, Md., Cossie Lovelace, Mitchellville, Md., and Marie Miller, Atlantic City, N.J.; one brother, Walker Panell, Washington, D.C.; seven grandchildren, Demond Lark, Shanta Lark, Quinton Keatts, Alicia Anderson, Jerrell Lark, Pamela Nelson, and Anita Nelson, all of Roanoke; and a host of relatives and friends. KERN, Berkley West, Sr., 84, of Bedford, died Monday, August 5, 1996 , in Camelot Hall Nursing Home in Lynchburg. He was born in Bedford County on February 17, 1912, a son of the late Joseph H. Kern and Florence Martin Kern. He was a retired machinist and was a member of the Masons. He is survived by his wife, Marion Carner Kern; four sons, Michael West Kern, Lindenwold, N.J., Donald Wayne Kern, Bedford, Berkley West Kern Jr., Ellicott City, Md., Samuel Joseph Kern, Pasadena, Md.; four brothers, Harrison J. Kern, Silver Spring, Md., Warren H. Kern, Newport News, Earl L. Kern, Baltimore, Md., Roy E. Kern, Roanoke; eight grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 7, 1996, at Carder-Tharp Funeral Home after which a funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. with the Rev. McCARTHY, Maurice Taylor, Sr., of 352 Clays Crossing Drive, Forest, died Monday, August 5, 1996, at his residence. He was the husband of Muriel Gibson McCarthy. Born on August 7, 1918, he was the son of the late William Edgar McCarthy and Flossie Virginia Grubbs McCarthy. He was a member and former deacon of Chestnut Hill Baptist Church. He was owner of McCarthy's Bakery in Lynchburg from 1939 to 1953. He then began a real estate career with Acree & Peck Inc., of which he became co-owner. He later formed Acree, Bailey & McCarthy Inc., of which he was president. He was owner and president of Central Virginia Corporation, a home building concern. He was a senior residential appraiser, active in the Society of Real Estate Appraisers and was local chapter president. Mr. McCarthy was twice president of the Lynchburg Board of Realtors, and was Lynchburg Realtor of the Year. He was the recipient of the state award for the Realtor best exemplifying the code of ethics. He was a director of Co-Operative Building and Loan Association for 18 years, retiring in 1989. He was a founding director of the Campbell County Utilities and Service Authority and became its first chairman in 1964. For six years, he was chairman of the Campbell County Electoral Board. He helped organize and was president of the Brookville Lions Club, and was president of the Brookville Ruritan Club. Mr. McCarthy was instrumental in organizing the Brookville High School Band and the Bandboosters Association. He assisted in organizing the Brookville Football Little League and served as a coach. He was co-founder of the ``Big Band Sound,"" a group of local musicians who promoted the sound of the big band era by giving many benefit concerts. For many years, he also was very active in numerous other civic and community organizations, including chairing the Red Cross, United Fund, Piedmont Heart Association, being director of the Campbell County Chamber of Commerce, and being active in the Brookville PTA and many community clubs. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Dr. Maurice T. McCarthy Jr. and his wife Deborah Cox McCarthy; one daughter, Judith McCarthy Overacre and her husband William F. Overacre; two grandsons, Michael Aaron McCarthy and Jonathon McCarthy, all of Lynchburg; three granddaughters, Deborah O. Farina of Gloucester, Christina O. Pierce of Harrisonburg and Joanna Overacre of Richmond; one great-grandson, Austin Farina of Gloucester; two brothers, Robert L. McCarthy and his wife Mary Alice F. McCarthy of Virginia Beach and Jack A. McCarthy and his wife Velma H. McCarthy of Lynchburg, and one sister, Christine McCarthy Limbrick of Fredericksburg. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chestnut Hill Baptist Church in Lynchburg, with the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Putt and the Rev. Dr. Maurice T. McCarthy officiating. SPIGLE, Stephen Mark, 40, of Roanoke, died Monday, August 5, 1996 at home. He worked for Silver Enterprises for many years, was a graduate of Augusta Military Academy in Staunton, and was a member of Colonial Presbyterian Church. Survivors include two daughters, Meghan Elizabeth Spigle, Rebecca Spigle; a son, William Randall Spigle; his parents, Jack and Betty Spigle, Roanoke; two sisters, Mrs. Michelle Higginbotham, Winchester, Miss Katey Spigle, Roanoke; a brother, David B.
