'Affair in the Square'

Tickets are now on sale for Center in the Square's annual ``Affair in the Square.'' The event will be held at the center Oct. 12 from 8 p.m. until midnight.

This year's theme, ``A European Night,'' will feature decorations on each floor as well as live music and foods and beverages from Roanoke's restaurants and caterers.

Two levels of the adjacent parking garage will be used to guarantee plenty of room for dancing.

The fund-raiser, originated and sponsored by Davidsons since 1983 and now joined by The McGuire Foundation, benefits the center, which provides rent-free facilities, security, utilities, custodial services and selected marketing and administrative services to the Art Museum of Western Virginia, The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge, Mill Mountain Theatre, Roanoke Valley History Museum and the Science Museum of Western Virginia and Hopkins Planetarium.

The event has sold out for the last several years; patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets early.

Tickets, at $40 per person, are available at all Davidsons locations (343-2441) and at the Mill Mountain Theatre box office (342-5740).

The Market Square parking garage will be closed to the public except for handicapped parking on the first floor.

New zoo additions

The Mill Mountain Zoo has announced the births of two golden lion tamarins to the zoo's Species Survival Plan captive breeding program.

The animals were born on July 1 and bring the total number of tamarins in the zoo's program to seven.

The SSP program is a conservation effort that breed endangered species in captivity with hopes or releasing them into their native habitats. The golden lion tamarin SSP has plans to release selected tamarins into their native habitat of the Brazilian rainforest.
