The Rev. Bob Cooley has joined the staff of Salem Wesleyan Church to lead ministries of music, youth and senior adults. Cooley, 46, has come from an 18-month tenure at First Wesleyan Church; his wife, Norma, has been on the staff of its child-care center. Cooley, from Atlanta, was educated at Southern Wesleyan College in Central, S.C. They have two sons, Nathan and Jonathan. The Rev. Orlando Gonzalez, pastor of Salem Wesleyan, said the addition of Cooley represents expansion of the church's ministries.

The Rev. Ron E. Thompson and his wife, Thelma, will leave the Roanoke Valley on Sunday to move to Gilbert, Ariz., to assume the pastorate of East Valley Grace Brethren Church. For the past seven years, the Thompsons have traveled in itinerant evangelistic and music ministries. They led Patterson Memorial Grace Brethren Church on Hollins Road previously. |SPECIAL EVENTS| River of Life Bible College, an extension of Jacksonville Theological Seminary sponsored in the Roanoke Valley by Maranatha Fellowship Church, is open for registration for the fall term. An orientation night is scheduled Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at Maranatha, 2715 Green Ridge Road. The private evangelical Christian Bible college is operating the classes for the second year in Roanoke. A degree is awarded in religious arts. Call 562-0075 for information.

Heritage Weekend, a spiritual growth event sponsored by First Church of God, is planned Friday through Sunday at the church at 5008 Hildebrand Road N.W. It will be led by Dr. Gilbert Stafford, a radio preacher from church headquarters in Anderson, Ind. Nursery will be provided for all services. Evening worship will be Friday and Saturday at 7. On Saturday at 10 a.m. following a continental breakfast, the guest will review his new book, "Theology of Disciples." Sunday's service at 10:45 will be followed by a pot-luck lunch.

Roanoke Valley Church of Christ, a cross-cultural congregation worshiping at 3622 Hershberger Road N.W., has scheduled Vacation Bible School Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 6 to 7:30. It is open to all ages, with activities especially for children 4 through 14. Call 563-5978 to register.

The Rev. Eugene Reynolds, pastor of Jerusalem Christian Church of Martinsville, will preach revival services Sept. 9 through 11 at Loudon Avenue Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Worship will begin nightly at 7:30, and dress is casual. The church is at 730 Loudon Ave. N.W.

Saunders Grove Church of the Brethren will have its annual Homecoming on Sunday at the church in Bedford County. Sunday school will be at 10 a.m., with worship services led by Pastor Edd West beginning at 11. Lunch will be served outside at noon, followed by gospel singing by the Strings of Praise at 2 p.m.

Ebenezer Baptist Church will observe its Homecoming at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the church at 7049 Thirlane Road. The Rev. Leroy Carter, pastor of the Second Mount Airy Baptist Church, will be the guest minister. Dinner will be served immediately after the service.
