ARNOLD, Alice Warren, 87, of Abingdon, died Wednesday, September 18, 1996. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday, Campbell Funeral Home Chapel.

BENNETT, Walter James, 75, of San Diego, Calif., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, September 10, 1996. He was born September 22, 1920 in Redbank N.J., and resided in Floyd prior to his recent move to San Diego, Calif. Walter is survived by his wife, Marlene Marie Bennett; his six children and thei r spouses by a previous marriage, Jimmy Bennett, Wayne Bennett, Debbie Blauvalt, Vikkie Thompson, Lisa Bennett, and Melanie Bennett; his adopted daughter, Jessica Lynn Bennett. He is also survived by his five stepchildren and their spouses, Tim Wolfe, Lynnette Pham, Valerie Wolfe, Kristi Shed, and Maria Dronsick. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; and ten stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one step great-grandchild. Services will be held on Sunday, September 22, 1996, at 3 p.m. at Abundant Life Fellowship in Pilot, with Rev. Larry Meadors officiating

BUTLER, Trula Bain, 92, of Salem, passed away Tuesday, September 17,1996. Services 11 a.m. Friday in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel, Salem.

FEATHER, Paul Fred, 86, of Riner, passed away Wednesday morning, September 18, 1996, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Shawsville. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dewey O. Weaver Jr. and the Rev. Greg Mullis. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Richardson-Horne in Christiansburg.

FEATHERSTON, Blanche Tyree, 84, of Richmond, passed away Saturday, September 14, 1996, at The Masonic Home of Virginia, Richmond. She was a daughter of the late William Smith Tyree and the late Alwilda Virginia Law Tyree of Rocky Mount. Following graduation from the Rocky Mount High School, she worked in Roanoke and later established permanent residence in Richmond. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred Lacey Featherston; and a son, Billy Featherston. Mrs. Featherston was a member of Ginter Park United Methodist Church, a long-time member of United Methodist Women and, for many years, worked part-time at The Hermitage Home. She was a member of Ginter Park Woman's Club and was retired from the Richmond Commissioner of Revenue Office. Surviving are two children, a daughter, Beverley Featherston Massie and son-in-law, Billy Ray Massie, of Mechanicsville; a son, Richard Courtney Featherston Sr. of Richmond; three grandchildren, Mary Melissa Massie of Richmond, Douglas Andrew Massie of VMI in Lexington, Richard Courtney Featherston Jr. of Richmond; one great-grandson, Forest Glenn Featherston of Richmond; also two sisters, Helen Tyree Gentry and Margaret Tyree Lovell Ramsey, both of Richmond; a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, September 16, 1996, at Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Richmond.

GARDNER, Wilma Allison, 92, of 3712 Danesbrough Drive, Tallahassee, Fla., died Monday, September 16, 1996, in the Tallahassee Community Hospital. She was born in Wythe County on January 6, 1904, and was the daughter of the late Grat Allison and Elva Early Allison. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leland Gardner. Surviving are one sister, Katherine Brown, Tallahassee, Fla.; two brothers, Oscar Allison, Powhatan, Ri chard E. Allison, Hurt; three half sisters. A graveside service will be held Friday, September 20, 1996, at 11 a.m. in Allison Cemetery, Barren Springs. GRAHAM, Pauline Harper, 82, of Radford, died Wednesday, September 18, 1996, at Wheatland Nursing Home. Born April 18, 1914, she was a native of Belfast, and the daughter of the late W. T. and Susie Harper. She was retired from Hercules, Inc. after 25 years of service, and was a member of Grove United Methodist Church in Radford. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arch Spencer Graham Sr. Surviving are her sons and their wives, Jim and Betsy Graham of Radford, Bob and Flo Graham of Radford, Arch and Susan Graham of Hockessin, Del.; grandchildren, Chris Graham and wife, Kim, of Radford, Amy Graham of Hockessin, Del., Suzanne Graham and husband, Darren Minarik of Alexandria, Drew Graham and fiancee, Carolyn Kimble of Pittsburgh, Pa., Sarah Graham Bradley and husband, John, of Wilmington, Del., Rob Graham and wife, Kris McBride of Fairfax, and A. Spencer Graham III of Hockessin, Del.; great-grandchildren, Lindsay Alexandra Graham of Radford, Anna Kaitlyn Bradley of Wilmington, Del.; three sisters and their families, Madge Hicks of Belfast, Willellen Vencil of Belfast, and Margaret Taylor of Abingdon. HATCHER, David Clarence Sr., 102, of Floyd, passed away Thursday, September 19, 1996 at the V.A. Medical Center, Salem. Mr. Hatcher was a veteran of World War I. Survivors include his wife, Laura Alderman Hatcher, Floyd; three sons, David Clarence Hatcher Jr., Patrick Springs, Berchard L. Hatcher, Manassas, Donnie Hatcher, Floyd; two daughters, Faye Burgess, Floyd, Maidelle Hatcher, Floyd; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Topeco Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Maberry Funeral Home.

KERFOOT, W. Douglas, of Roanoke, son of the late Daniel Franklin and Rose Ellen Kerfoot, beloved husband, devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died on Wednesday, September 18, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Helena; and two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Robert Cox and Vicki and Harlen Gudger. Grandchildren include Lisa Enyart, Matt and Wendy Cox, Kristen Cox, Jaime Miller, Lindsey Miller; and one great-granddaughter, Rose Ellen Enyart. Special friends include Dot Kerfoot, Paul Porter, and Kenn Miller. Doug retired from the VA Medical Center, Salem, after a 30-year career in administration. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Doug fought valiantly his battle with terminal cancer and lived by his own words, ``live every day like it is your last''. Visitation with the family will be held at Oakey's South Chapel on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the South Chapel. A celebration of his life will be held immediately following the service at the home of Sharon and Robert Cox, 5010 Falcon Ridge Road, Roanoke. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to the Cave Spring Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 20181, Roanoke, Va. 24018-0019. A special thank you to Drs. Randolph and Ferguson and the caring staff of Radiation Oncology at Lewis-Gale.

KING, Edith Alexander, 64, of Fairfield, died Wednesday, September 18, 1996, in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital Emergency Room in Lexington. A daughter of the late Guy and Vivian Wilson Alexander, she was born September 20, 1931 in Raphine. She attended the public school in Lexington and became a member of the former A.M.E. church in Steeles Tavern. Mrs. King was a retiree from Whites Truck Stop in Raphine. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Ann King. Surviving are her husband, Mr. John T. King, Fairfield; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Ricky and Marylin Alexander, Lexington, Thomas Edward King, Bronson, Fla., and Michael King, Fairfield; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Mrs. Patricia Ann and Willie Warren, North Carolina, Mrs. Jacqueline Bristol, Bronson, Fla., Miss Christine King, Amherst, Mrs. Angela Marie and Eddie Lee of Rustburg; three brothers, Thornton Alexander, Kenneth Alexander, and Maurice Alexander, all of Maryland; four sisters, Mrs. Clara Belle Pleasants and Mrs. Polly Ann Brown, both of Raphine, Mrs. Marian Brown, Fairfield, and Mrs. Frances Wells, Tacoma Park, Md.; and a close family friend, Chester Richerson, Amherst. LAW, William Henry, (``Wild Bill""), 84, of Rocky Mount, died Thursday, September 19, 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred R. Law. Surviving are two daughters and one son-in-law, Margaret A. Yerdon of Rocky Mount, Ruby and David Stroud of Middleton, Tenn.; one stepdaughter, Marjorie Mosely of Florida; one sister, Dorothy B. PERDUE, Vernard Walter, (``V. W.''), 83, of Roanoke, died Thursday, September 19, 1996. He was preceded in death by his brother, Curtis R. SHEPHERD, Rosa Elizabeth, 91, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Burley Shepherd; two daughters; and one son. SWOFFORD, James Oscar, 66, of Route 2, Bedford, died Wednesday, September 18, 1996, at the Cancer Center of Southwest Virginia. He was born August 30, 1930, in Mullin, Texas, a son of the late James Oscar Swofford Sr. and Mary Malone Oner Greene Swofford. He retired to Bedford after 22 years in the U.S. Air Force (Master Sergeant), where he operated Swofford Brothers, Inc., and later was an employee of Wal-Mart. He was associated with Thaxton Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Dolphine Overstreet Swofford; two sons, James O. Swofford III and his wife, Laura, of Missoula, Mont., Michael D. Swofford and his wife, Cathy, of Great Falls, Mont.; three daughters, Karen K. Glaeser and her husband, Chris, of Prior Lake, Minn., Toni G. Swofford of Wilmington, N.C., and Wendy C. Swofford of Temple Hills, Md.; a brother, Travis G. Swofford of Little Falls, N.J.; also eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Michael R. DuVal officiating. TALIAFERRO, Donald Eugene, 67, of Rt. 1, Box 171, Churchville, died 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, September 18, 1996 in the Oak Lea Nursing Home, Harrisonburg. Mr. Taliaferro served with the U. S. Air Force from October 24, 1950 until October 23, 1954. From July 1957 until December 1982, he was a member of the Virginia Army National Guard. He retired as Chief Warrant Officer C.W.4, and he was the recipient of the Legion of Merit and the Army Meritorious Service Medal. Survivors include his wife, Patricia (Stewart) Taliaferro; a son and daughter-in-law, John M. and Gail D. Taliaferro of Staunton; a daughter, Bonnie Taliaferro of Staunton; a grandson; a sister, Ethel T. Clarke of Salem; three stepsons, Rodney and Bradley Stewart, both of Harrisonburg, and Leslie Stewart of Keezletown; two stepdaughters, Pamela Sperry of New Market and Regina Hubble of Westminster, Md.; 12 stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. A service will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Saturday, September 21, 1996, in the Parnassus United Methodist Church by the Rev. Floetta Legg. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in the Henry Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
