NEW TO THE VALLEY

BLUE SKY MARKETING

Partners: Judy Tynan and Linda Comeau

Phone: 961-6850

Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment.

Services: Blue Sky Marketing, in business in Blacksburg for about two months, offers a full range of marketing services, Tynan and Comeau say. The two partners, whose backgrounds are in hospital marketing, say many New River Valley business owners may be good at the services they provide or the products they make or sell, but they may not have experience in other important aspects of doing business. They made need assistance in drawing up business plans, advertising campaigns, return on investments, management, and customer or audience analyses. Tynan, creator of the firm, and Comeau, marketing director, provide all of those things.

Tynan, 44, and Comeau, 46, don't think valley businesses are using the local media and advertising resources as effectively as they could. For example, outdoor advertising could be exploited more. And, of course, the Internet could have untold business and marketing potential. Blue Sky Marketing provides Internet access and homepage design.

One of their guiding philosophies in media and advertising design is that contemporary life is increasingly busy and cluttered, and modern-day consumers are more and more savvy and discriminating. Thus, they believe simple and elegant advertisements and advertising campaigns, featuring an educational message or information, may be the most effective and appropriate today.

Fees: Clients are given a quote after the job is studied.

About the owners: Tynan and Comeau were employed in Columbia Montgomery Regional Hospital's marketing department, but left when Columbia combined the marketing departments of five area hospitals into one. They decided to use their combined marketing experience of more than 40 years to open their own business. The name Blue Sky Marketing is not to suggest that marketing is ephemeral and out of reach but to connote their optimistic approach. Tynan has worked in the marketing departments of several large companies across the United States, and Comeau has done marketing in the area for 20 years.

Together, they believe, they balance and complement each other.
