RICHMOND FALLS IN OT

Ron Brockington's 10-yard touchdown run in overtime gave visiting Massachusetts a 23-17 victory over Richmond in the Yankee Conference opener for both teams.

Massachusetts (2-1) forced overtime when Jeff Smith hit Erik Henry on a 20-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal with three seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

Richmond (1-2) had the first overtime possession, but Andrew Slater was wide left on a 32-yard field-goal attempt.

Brockington carried on four of the Minutemen's five plays in overtime, scoring on second-and-eight.

Richmond's Mat Shannon threw two touchdown passes, a 32-yarder to Muneer Moore in the first quarter and a 20-yarder to Matt Davis to give the Spiders a 17-10 lead 35 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Antony Catterton connected with Henry for a 9-yard touchdown for the Minutemen in the third period.

Matt Murphy had a 22-yard field goal for Massachusetts, and Slater kicked a 20-yarder for Richmond.

The game was a defensive struggle, with Massachusetts punting 13 times and Richmond 10. The Spiders had six sacks for 52 yards in losses.

In other games involving Virginia teams:

Morgan State 34, Liberty 28, OT: Tyrone Smith caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Otis Covington in overtime to lead the Bears (2-1) past the Flames (1-3) in Baltimore.

Liberty led 14-0 until halfway through the second quarter, breaking the Bears' streak of six quarters without giving up a touchdown.

The Flames led 14-13 at the half, and threatened to pull away with Lawrence Worthington's 3-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter. But Morgan State rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring with Covington's 12-yard touchdown pass to Smith and a 9-yard run by Covington to give the Bears a 28-21 lead with 4:21 remaining in the game.

Liberty's Lawrence Worthington ran into the end zone with 2:46 on the clock, helping send the game into overtime. But the Flames failed to score on two possessions in the extra period.

William and Mary 47, Bucknell 0: Josh Whipple caught five passes for 103 yards as the Tribe (3-1) rolled past the Bison (1-1) in Lewisburg, Pa.

William and Mary's Mike Cook completed 14 of 20 passes for 234 yards, and Corey Nesmith carried 21 times for a career-high 78 yards as the Tribe racked up 543 offensive yards to Bucknell's 59.

Meanwhile, the Tribe defense held Bucknell to a net of 3 yards rushing and repeatedly stuffed Bucknell All-America candidate Rich Lemon at the line, holding him to a career-low of minus-6 yards on six carries.

Lemon rushed for more than 1,000 yards in his first three seasons and is looking to become the first player in NCAA Division I-AA history with four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.

James Madison 38, Boston U. 7: Macey Brooks caught three touchdown passes for the second consecutive week as the Dukes (3-0, 1-0) trounced the Terriers (0-3, 0-2) in a Yankee Conference game in Boston.

Greg Maddox came off the JMU bench to replace injured quarterback Willie Gonzalez and completed 20 of 29 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns.

Jay Jones caught six passes for 139 yards and one touchdown and Brooks, who grabbed three scoring passes Sept.14 against McNeese State, caught seven for 69 yards.

D'Artagnan Townes scored the other touchdown on a 4-yard run, and John Coursey kicked a 41-yard field goal to complete the scoring for the Dukes.

North Carolina A&T 24, Hampton 20: Michael Basnight rushed for two touchdowns and Ben Garrett threw a 69-yard scoring pass as the Aggies handed the Pirates their first regular-season home loss since 1991, winning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Hampton (1-2) had a 6-0 lead, following Lamont Still's 62-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

North Carolina A&T (4-0) scored the next 24 points, holding Hampton scoreless through the second and third quarters. Basnight had scoring runs of 9 yards and 1 yard, and Garrett hooked up with John Crews for the long pass.

The Pirates scored twice early in the fourth quarter on touchdown passes by Ron Johnson.

Guilford 24, Washington and Lee 10: Wide receiver Junior Lord caught nine passes for a career-high 148 yards and three touchdowns as the Quakers downed the Generals in Greensboro, N.C., in the Old Dominion Athletic conference opener for both teams.

Guilford trailed 7-0 early in the second quarter after Chas Castain caught a 10-yard scoring pass from Brooks Fischer, capping a 14-play, 86-yard drive.

The Quakers (1-1) then the scored three times in the last five minutes of the quarter to take control.

W&L (0-2) pulled to 16-10 in the third quarter with a 37-yard field goal from Matt Hollbrook, but the Generals would come no closer.

Emory & Henry 20, Bridgewater 14: Oliver Jordan ran for 114 yards and three touchdowns as the Wasps edged the Eagles in an ODAC opener in Emory.

Jordan had scoring runs of 14, 66 and 1 yard as E&H (1-1) rushed for 252 yards. Bridgewater (2-1) scored on a 57-yard fumble recovery by Michael Wicks and quarterback Chad Rowland's 7-yard touchdown run.
